Brief backstory: 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, has a HUD, so it projects MPH (and many other things) onto the specially-coated windshield. Unfortunately, the car has some issues with heating/cooling, and leaks in heavy rain.

Does anybody know of an aftermarket HUD, and a way to then coat the windshield of a different car? I don't care about the various amounts of information, I just want MPH display, it's incredibly convenient compared to the dial.

Can't be done. The HUD in a GM gets all it's info from the engine computer. And the window has a special area in the glass that is intended to allow the HUD to project properly. GM HUD has an internal Vacuum Flourescent Display which is then reflected out onto the window. I have a 1999 Grand Prix with the HUD and I had to fix it once, when it would not
get bright enough .. bad connections at the photocell inside the unit. And the unit you & I have only does Speed, Turn
Signals, Low Fuel & Radio Tuning .... The unit in a Corvette does a lot more.

Much of the data that those units display can be accessed through any modern car's ODB-II port. So it would be technically possible to create a simple and easy-to-install aftermarket unit, but I don't know of any that actually exist.

people on the Corvette forum have installed a HUD without adding the specially coated windshield.

I had one in a Pontiac that I really loved until the day I bought a pair of polarized sunglasses. Couldn't see it at all with those on.

I didn't know they could do a retrofit without a lot of special items. But for some reason, that company is no longer making them. So either they didn't work properly or just they did not get the sales volume they wanted.

does anyone know where you can get replacement parts or a new hud unit for a 1999 pontiac grand prix gtp thanx rich

Might want to start a new thread as this is from 2008.

For that check eBay and Salvage yards.
