Heads Up...Be Aware...Fry's CPU Practices...

I was running late on Saturday to pick up my brother from work...I had to pick up an A64 3200+ on my way (hour drive south of where I live...I was visiting for the day - No Fry's down there)...

Anyway, I specifically instructed the sales person & the person at the register that I wanted a NEW CPU. They both said, sure, no problem...

Since I clearly told BOTH employees I wanted a BRAND NEW CPU, I didn't think I'd have to thoroughly INSPECT the box before leaving the store...However, I did visually inspect the box to ensure it was a S939 & 3200+ CPU...

The seal had been broken so carefully, I didn't even notice it (YES, that's the 1st thing I should have checked, but didn't)...

I get to my brother's house after picking him up from work & the Damn seal is BROKEN...You couldn't tell because it had been cut w/ a razor...I open the box & I'll be DAMNED if there's not a F****** white label (those of you who shop at Fry's know about the White Label of Death) on the INSIDE of the box (SUPER PISSED OFF LOOK HERE)...

Keep in mind, at this point, I took all of the components w/ me to my brother's house (an hour South) to do a new system build (No Fry's for an hour)...I know, I could have driven back home, exchanged the CPU & had nothing to bitch about)...But that's not the point!!! Dammit!!!

Anyway, the CPU itself did look untouched...No fingerprints, no marks, scuffs or scrapes anywhere to be found...The HSF still had the tape & sticker on it...Also looked untouched...No signs whatsoever of usage...But still! I don't give a rat's a** if it was used or not, it was sold as NEW!

My brother fires up the system & everything worked fine the 1st time...His system is up & running now without a hiccup...

Moral of this story...Make sure you inspect every single damn thing you buy at Fry's...Cuz this Sh** could happen to you...

Yes, I am going to march over to that Fry's store today or tomorrow & let the Senior Manager there know exactly how I feel...I spend way too much money there to lay down & take this...

Have fun...

Vent over...

I guess you could say that, but it's still deceitful business practices, no matter how you look at it...

but you know all about Fry's, so you got no beef.

when one buys a watch from a downtown crack using street vendor, one might not expect a perfectly satisfying transction

I've actually had pretty good luck at Fry's...But I bought this CPU for my brother & there isn't a Fry's close to him...If I bought this for myself, it would have been instantly exchanged for a brand new one...End of story...I'll still shop at Fry's after this, but I wanted everyone here to know what happened...& to be on the lookout for the same...

"decietful"? nah. "sloppy"? yes, as usual; it's Fry's after all. - I used to work in a NOC that had a big banner on one side of the room that said "trust but verify". That's great advise, btw.

It is deceitful when the White Sticker is supposed to be placed on the outside of the box & in plain view & instead it's hiding under the inside flap...That is deceitful...

No, it would be deceitful if the $7 an-hour, pimple-faced 15 year-old had placed the sticker inside the box in an attempt to "fool" you/someone else into thinking it's something it's not for the purpose of making a couple extra illegal bones. ? Seriously, Fry's ?the Corporation? has a lot better things to do w/ their time than sloppily attempting to take you for a couple bucks.

So technically you did receive a new cpu which you asked for. You didnt ask for a new box just a cpu 😛 Just kidding of corse, was pretty crappy of them

I can vouch for the same expierance there, well almost. I got a bundled motherboard/CPU deal for my then at the time gf. They ran out of new CPU's, and I didn't mind if it was used. But , I didn't inspect it in their presence. I have my girlfriend hold it carefully (still boxed and not looked at) for the ride home so it won't bounce around the trunk or back seat.
I throw the system board in the case, carefully open the CPU box (badly taped everywhere), and take out the cpu package. Without opening the plastic thing that carries it, I hold it up to the desklamp. Argh, seven bent pins!
I take it back, they said by policy, they don't accept bent pin'd processors. period. end of story. I argue with the customer service lady. I told her I didn't touch it, and it's my word against the stores. I told her that Fry's accepted a bent pin'd cpu for a return, and somebody got away with it. Meaning it's either fry's or me who has to fork over the cost. she didn't seem too sympathetic. I got the manager, who inspected the cpu by taking it out of the plastic (not carefully) and dropped it on the cs' counter. He picked it up, with his bare oily hands and looks at it. His big fat thumb bent three more pins before he could focus.
I ask the cs lady, how many bent pins she counted. she replied seven.
I told asked them both, how many now...they replied with 12. lmfao!
I said we have a problem, the manager bent the pins as well, they promptly boxed it and gave me my credit back.
I'll never buy anything related to cpu's or system boards there again.

I'm not sure if you're reading the same thread I'm reading, but not placing the White Sticker (indicating a used product) on the outside of the box in Plain View is portraying that the product is NEW...And I did ask for a NEW product...Twice...

Anytime the package / box is opened (seal broken) & a White Sticker is placed somewhere on the packaging, the product should no longer be sold as NEW...End of story...I mean, HELLO, what do you think the White Sticker means???

good grief.. okay man, you win.. to hell w/ human error! This whole thing smacks of extortion.. I think there?s conclusive evidence here that everyone from the $7 dollar-an-hour, pimple-faced lackey all the way to the CEO of Fry's Inc is out to get you (and your little dog too!). This was obviously a concerted top-to-bottom effort by Fry's to defraud you of your hard-earned dough through a thoroughly planned, orchestrated and executed system of deceit. don't trust the man! run for your lives! lock your doors! fight the power!

Why deal with Fry's anyway? ZipZoomFly and free 2-day shipping >*.

Fry's is 2 minutes from my house & I typically have good experiences there...This was the bad apple...I started this thread so you guys would be aware of the situation & to be more observant, even if you're in a rush to be somewhere else...

There will always be bad experiences. So far i have had absolute success with Fry's. (In Georgia). I got one of the defective gigabyte mini atx boards. I took it back, and forgot the driver disk at home, and on top of that i had lost my receipt. The customer service personnel went through pretty much every single day of sales until they found my transaction. They gave me full credit back for the board, despite not having the driver disk. All in all, it was very nice of them.

Of course next time i go i can have the most hellish trip. But so far, they have earned my loyalty when i need a computer part fast. (usually i hit up newegg or ZZF)

absolutely beautiful vent. I hope you take care of Fry's in your own little devious way:evil:

I guess you could say that, but it's still deceitful business practices, no matter how you look at it...

If the receipt indicated that the product was new there is a reasonible chance what they did was illegal in your state. You might want to look into and if it is, file a complaint the the attorney general's office or appropriate state agency. If they get enough complaints, they may take legal action against them.

most likely it was never opened by the prior purchaser, and that fry's themselves opened it. i've watched them do it when i've returned brand new stuff still in those big cable ties.

same thing happened excapt i returned to fl from cal. After much phone tag contacted bbb in cal.Could not receive or send messages due to huricain for 2 weeks.Lo&behold frys credited my card for full amount and told be to keep chip. All without any real proof i was telling truth. They of course claimed it was a one off..

Hi, A friend bought a KNOWN returned Heat Sinks and fan. It had the label where you could see it and the clerk acknowleged it was a return. Wouldn't run. Had a plastic "Grill" screwed to the top of the fan. Was pushed into the blades. Got it going. Noticed the "Hooks" to adapt it to the P4 holder were the wrong ones. Too short and too big to hook into the HS. Watch what you buy at Fry's. Jim
