xp has a headphone mode?

and likelinus, where did you get the 280's for 70?
Yes, go to Control Panel - Sound, and under the "speaker settings" area, there's an "advanced" button that once hit, lets you select the speaker mode.

I have a pair of Technics RPF880's and to me they sound damned nice.
Would most probably buy another pair if they ever broke.

The 580 are muchbetter than the 590 from what I've read on the headroom forums. Basically the 580 have the same drivers as the 600 but in a different housings. The 590 are completely different.

many people prefer the 590 to the 580. the 590 are definately a lot easier to drive and power, so you dont need as high end equipment to enjoy them. the 580s will sound bad if you dont have a high quality amp+source. needless to say, the hd600s are even worse on this aspect. however, with, say a PPA amp, and a good source, the HD600s really shine.

a LOT of people however, hear a veil in the hd600. i personally dont, but MANY people do. too recessed maybe? or perhaps its a result of using a bad setup with the 600s. one thing about the 600s that most people dont realize is that they need very specific pairing, they only go well with some things.

anyway, yea, if anyone is interested in hd600s, now is the time to make the jump. they can be found as little as $200 used now on forums and toddthevinyljunky's store. reason why there is suddenly an explosion in supply of HD600s and extremely low prices is everyone is making room for the new HD650s. (i havent heard it, but people say its awesome).

i got rid of my 600s and also an etymotic er4p (which can be found $220 new on ebay) a month back and im using the DT880s now. i love 'em. 😀.

I've been using a pair of Sony MDR-V6's for about 2 years now, and I love them. My former roommate has a pair of senn 280 pro's, and while they are good, I like the V6's a tad better. They are old however, but they are the standard in studio monitor headphones. 😀
The MDR-V6's are absolutely awesome, amazingly reliable (will last for years and years), inexpensive, extremely comfortable, and the standard in almost every recording studio in the country.
But when it comes to headphones, this forum (and most of the intarweb in general) is anti-Sony.

Their loss.

What did you think of the Grado SR-80s? I need a new pair and they look like just the one.

From what I've read they're better than comparable Sennheiser 'phones.

Aiwa full headphones have the best bass response and lowest impedace for their price and only set you back 30$ for something you'll sit on anyway as opposed to a few hundred...

I personally loved my Grado's, but they broke too quickly and I just decided to try something else. Now that I've had both I'd really like to go back and try some of the higher end SR's. But I'm happy for now.

sr80s are some very great entry level 'phones. i still have mine just for kicks. very very open, but that shouldnt be a problem if you are using it at home. easy to power (as all grados are), and sound very very forward. their sound signature is very upfront, and if you've heard and like klipsch speakers, you'll definately like the sr80s.

edit: forgot to add some people have comfort issues with grado phones. dont forget to try different pads for them if you find them lacking in bass/comfort. i prefet bowl cups, but some people like flat pads. they sound more forward.

I have 580's and I agree with what has been said. They are first rate and extremely revealing. That means if your system shines, then you will love them. If your system is crap (and computer sources cannot compare to good audio equipment, so don't get it for that) they will show it for what it is, and you will hate them.

THe Harman/Kardon AVR-630 receiver I have on order has a dolby surround feature that according to reviews actually provides directional cues like 5.1 does, but without extra drivers needed. I'll let ya know how that works with the DVD-A player. 😀

bah, after reading dozens of threads on headfi, went with the 497's since they are open headphones, good sound. i don't care if i leak sound at home, i use buds on trips. and at 47-5dollars with rebate on amazon..not much competes. esp since the 580's and above need amps that cost a pretty penny. the 570's i tried at the store didn't sound bad, but seemed to need more power for volume and were very comfy with the total ear surrounds, but they seem to get bad reviews, so not spending double cost of 497's on em. guess i'll save up for the 590's which have the same comfy pads that don't touch your ears next🙂

what sucks are brick and morter stores, wtf is with the prices and selection🙁 sennheiser 570 sells for an absurd 150 at goodguys. best buy doesn't sell much of any, neither does frys or circuit city😛
