Hi, I have a case with a unit built with 2 usb ports, a mic jack and a headphone jack but the headphone jack does not work. The USB ports work fine...so I dont know what's wrong. Do I have to open it up and change some connections or something. I run Win Xp/w Sp1 and all pertinent updates. I have an nVidia nForce built in sound card. If anyone has any ideas, please help.

Thanks,

Prav

You might open it up to make sure there isn't a loose connection from the port to the board. Also, did you check the device status in device manager? Do you have another headphone jack in the back? Does it work? Did the port ever work? Who build it?

When did it stop working? did you do something right before it stopped?

Try this: go to start->RUN type sndvol32 and press enter. Is there a headphone output listed there. If so, make sure it is not muted and is set at a reasonable volume. If not, put on your headphones try unmuting and adjusting various sources -- maybe your headphone output corresponds with one of them.

First, angrykid...it never worked as far as I know. I don't have a headphone jack in the back but when I plug the headphones in the main speaker input, the headphones work so I know that is not the problem. My friend who builds computers professionally did it for me and the USB ports that are part of the same unit work fine. Here is kind of what my they look like

Next, elzmaddy, I did the volume control and there is no headphone volume listed though there is a bunch of other things (aux, line-in, microphone) etc. I tried all different volume configs and turned all of them all the way up and still nothing. Any more ideas??

It never worked.. well then that could explain things. I'd think the headphone jack is not connected to anything. Your friend may have forgot to connect, or forgot to tell you that the jack is useless. You may want to open the case and see if there is a wire coming from the headphone jack. If so, see what kind of connector it has. If its a regular 1/8" stereo connector, maybe you can route it to the back of the computer and plug it into one of the unused outputs. If it has a small connector with three or four pins or holes, perhaps it can plug somewhere on the sound card. Then you would go into Windows Sound Controls again and try to find which source it corresponds to. Good luck!
