I usually tip based on the dealer's personality or skills. You are basically tipping him/her like you would a waitress at a restaurant. They are providing a service. They aren't making the money you lose, so the fact that you win/lose shouldn't matter. (I know it does, but it shouldn't). In addition, if you are at a $50 table you would tip more then a $5 table. If you go to Denny's and get a $5 meal you don't tip as much as you would at a steak house with a $75 meal right?! With that said, except for Hold Em, I don't tip until I get up. Occasionally I make a bet for the dealer if they are friendly and/or poking fun at some noob there. Most casinos all the dealers in an area split tips at the end of a shift.

In black jack you can place a bet for the dealer by placing the bet slightly in front of yours. Usually there is a circle you place your bet, you would place their bet half in /half out of the circle so it is between them and your bet. Side bets are almost always a HUGE advantage for the house, but they are fun and usually only cost $1 or so. Side bets vary from table to table and casino to casino.

I'm in Vegas the week before xmas, so I'm warming up my dice skills. Use to play mostly Black Jack, but now I'm a craps fan.

Heading to Vegas next Thursday :). Probably will play blackjack this time around and if i work up the courage try the $1/$2 tables at Bally's

I've played blackjack at Bally's - it was a real mistake. You are much better off playing the $5 or $10 dollar tables at a good casino like the Mirage, where the odds of winning are much more balanced.

Ooo I'm not playing the Blackjack tables at Bally's.. I meant the $1/$2 limit poker tables at Bally's. I'm playing blackjack at either the casino we are staying in or somewhere else. Haven't really decided yet. Last time we went we stuck with the slots which was a big mistake.

Obviously if you win a huge amount of money, the IRS might take notice but let's say you win $5000-10,000. Does anyone really keep tax records on that?

I remember hearing somewhere that it depends on how much you win as to whether not you are expected to pay taxes on it.

There are no taxes on table winnings. There are taxes on machine games (slots, video poker, etc.) if you win at least the minimum reportable amount on a single win (@ $1200).

Just to clarify, anything you win is taxable income. According to federal law, if you hit a jackpot of 1200 or more in bingo or on a slot machine, the casino has to record it and report it to the IRS.

Okay, thanks. Am I really supposed to tip the dealer for every single hand I win?

It's good etiquette.

He should tip the dealer every single hand he wins??!??!?!? Surely you are joking - that isn't even realistic. Generally, I make sure I tip the dealer at least once an hour, more if I'm doing well. Most people don't tip the dealer at all, which is really rude.

EDIT: My bad, I play blackjack and not poker. I can maybe see tipping the dealer for every pot you win in poker.

I was referring to poker ;). I'll put in a dealer bet every once in a while if I'm doing well at the blackjack tables.

That is so true--At Borgata recently, my table had very pleasant and funny dealers until this biatch took over. She was very curt, scolded the n00bs, and threw the cards at the players. The only explanation I could think of is she was having a very bad day. No tip for her!

More poker jargon, not sure what this means.
dont throw your chips haphazardly into the middle. stack and push them in nicely so the dealer can verify the amount.
What is a 4/8 table exactly and what are other examples of that?
the blinds. $4 is the small blind amount, $8 is the big blind. my advise: buy into a tournament for like $50 or so. you're somewhat limited in your spending unless you rebuy chips or there is an add-on. by the time you're done you should have a good grasp of table etiquette and such.

You don't need to tip every winning hand.

I have been to vegas a good number of times and shreveport as well as some other casinos and I only tip when I'm on a hot streak or feel that I need to "change my luck" if on a bad streak.

And my tips will always only be $1 each time, unless I'm leaving the table. If I am leaving w/ a big gain, I'll leave a $5 tip maybe. (this is on $5 min BJ tables). if i've been sitting at a $5 BJ table consistently winning, in 1 hour I will have tipped the dealer probably $20 total give or take.

It's all how you feel you want to do...it's your money. if you want to tip, tip, if not, don't feel obligated. But it's always nice to tip a few $/table that you play on. If the dealers are asses or boring, don't tip.

Alright, i've learned a lot so far, thanks :)

If I bluff and everyone else folds should I show what cards I have? When is it the right time and the wrong time to show your cards? I know wrong would be at the beginning of the hand, but you know what i mean :p

Well, I like to let people know I bluff, so they have to think twice about calling me all the time. Would be considered rude to show my cards after a bluff though?

In that case, if you're on your way to AC, the Tropicana has no limit tables. I'm not sure if The Borgata does, but I'd avoid that room anyway, the wait is always REALLY long after 6pm fri/sat because the game's popular and its the nicest casino. If you're going earlier, though, go there.. the drinks are the best :) Actual bottled beers.

Not going to vegas unfortunately =x - Going to some Indian owned one here in Tucson. I'd have to spend all my cash to go to vegas, then I wouldn't have any money to gamble :p

In 4/8, the blinds are not $4 and $8. The blinds are $2 and $4. The 4 in 4/8 represents the size of the bets made before and after the flop. The 8 represents the size of the bets after the turn and river.

Can you just keep re-raising in limit poker? I'm a little confused how all that works.
