I was just there a few weeks ago, there's a Jazz bar called the Elephant Room. It's a hole in the wall but it had great music.

The Elephant Room is incredible, great live jazz. Get there real early (8-9 PM) if you go on a weekend. It will be a $5-$15 cover but well worth it.

there's also a statue of SRV by the lake near 6th street you may want to check out. it's in a pretty nice park.

http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2741995-stevie_ray_vaughan_statue_austin-i

That's about a mile from 6th but a great place. It's Zilker park along the "lake" (the width of a river) and it's right off Barton Springs on the south side of down town.

Food - pretty sure you can search any of these and find locations, menus or whatever.

for bbq, salt lick as mentioned above, but it's a drive.

For tex-mex, Maudies or Chuy's down south for some old school Austin Texmex, or Manuels downtown for a little bit nicer. You should try to get breakfast from a cheap mexican place at some point. Get migas if you've never had them. Trudy's (not real cheap, but not expensive either), Aranda's (really cheap) or Tamale House #3 (reeeeally cheap, but awesome). El Arroyo is sort of lame, and DO NOT go to Baby Acapulco except for drinks.

Hang out in afternoon/early night on South Congress. Lots of places to eat there. If you can time it, check it out on first Thursday, it gets a lot busier then.

NXNW for a brewpub with a pretty good menu.

I second all of these except I will take Lockhart of The Salt Lick any day.

Kerbey Lane Cafe.

http://www.kerbeylanecafe.com/menu/our-24-hour-menu

Rudy's BBQ if you just want quick and delicious bbq. Otherwise, try Salt lick or County Line, but those are a bit further out.

Tex mex - Trudy's (sunday brunch buffet is really good) and Chuy's

6th st is where all the college kids go for bars. 4th st has a bit more of an older crowd.

Kerbey Lane is my favorite restaurant. All their food is delicious (don't get a burger though) but the pancakes are especially incredible, also the Kerbey Queso (guac+queso).

Torchy's, Juan in a Million for food. Good stuff for breakfast.

I've never been but only heard good things.

hell, even rudy's is good bbq, and that's a convenience store. salt lick is interesting mostly because it's a dry county, so the place is BYOB. people roll up with kegs and 20 people, get the all you can eat barbecue, and then get loaded all afternoon.

if you want the best bbq you need to head south on 183 to lockhart. about 30 minutes or so, i'd estimate. smitty's market and kreuz market are the places to hit up.

hula hut isn't tex mex. it's a strange but tasty concoction. they're owned by the same people as chuy's (which is tex mex with new mex influence).

matt's el rancho never impressed me.

This. Hula Hut is TexMex plus Tropical type stuff. Definitely delicious. I agree about matt's el rancho, it's decent but I prefer Chuy's, Trudy's, and Maudie's.

No one said Round Rock donuts, a short drive but good stuff.

Ranch Road 32 just south of Wimberly, Texas is gorgeous. It's called the devil's backbone or something like that, gorgeous canyon country.

If you want a gorgeous drive take the scenic route to the Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls, Texas. Great home cooking and their pie has meringue the size of your head. Take 1431 there and Hamilton Pool Road back. Also, check out Hamilton Pool (google the images, it's awesome).

That's one great afternoon trip, Lockhart for bbq is another. A few more are trips to the Bluebell factory (at the very least try bluebell homemade vanilla, best ice cream ever) and a trip to Shiner Texas where they make Shiner Beer.

Find an event at the Alamo Drafthouse. It's basically eating at the movies but they do really cool events. Master Pancake Theater is like Mystery Science Theater 3000 (comedians at the front) and incredible. They also have sing-alongs and things of that sort. I like the original the best (go to originalalamo.com and check out "signature events").

If I think of anything else I'll let you know. Austin kicks ass, have a great time. I'm moving to Boston in a few weeks so I'm not around much on the weekends but if you are around during the week and want to grab a beer or food PM me.

Uhhh....WHAT???

Did you intend some sort of "meaning?"

You failed.

Are you coherent?
If so, let's see it.

If not, don't post while you're wallowing in incoherence, incapable of formulating a rational thought.

Guess what?
Your "uhhhhhhhhh" doesn't express any sort of thought dude.

It's rather an utter and embarrassing (for you) total complete stupid and utter fail. Ha Ha Ha at feeble-minded Crusty!

why the fuck did you bring politics into this? the OP wasn't asking to move there, just what to visit while in town. some of you rightwing dingbats just don't when to keep politics out of the conversation.

your public profile doesn't say where you're FROM.

If you're from anyplace in the USA south (where there's phony "country" music), or east (where they talk too fast, rthrough their nose, with really odd accent), thenAustin will seem exciting, even down to the bottom-of-barrel LBJ museum by UT Austin. However, there are better live acts to see at UT.

On the other hand, if you're from California, Oregon or Washington, then the most socially advanced place in Texas, which is definitely Austin, will seem like a Twilight Zone 20-year throwback experience. That's not "BAD," but IRL, be ready to APPRECIATE the very real difference.

I'd love to re-import some of those old time values, once alive among the people in California and now chased away, but still alive back there 1,800 miles east of us in Texas. I'd love to bring that BACK into California, to our extreme and desperate benefit, since all here has been lost to the ultra-liberals (Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein regime) and the overrunning hordes of illegal, uneducated Mexican peasants (we're talking literally tens of millions of illegal Mexicans just in California alone, USA Gov't "official" counts be damned!) .

Our lawmen flat R E F U S E to enforce any border with Baja Cali. Especially Democrats like OBAMA. God Damn! The very utterly best place in the USA (California) is lost to Mexico. Maybe we need to consult with those Montana militiamen, and then start ACTING OUT like bad boys! In my sights / bang!

Blockade our BORDER N O W GOD DAMNED YOU OBAMA!!! RIGHT NOW!!! TONIGHT!!!!! And why not, all you hard left democrat pussies? We all know it's so that you can force "amnesty" and voting rights for those unwelcome teeming hordes. , God DAMNED Y O U !!!! YOU HARD LEFT DEMOCRATS WILLINGLY, KNOWINGLY, TOTALLY FUCKED OVER OUR WHOLE COUNTRY JUST TO GAIN VOTES OF MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL MEXICANS,

despite their most unwelcome presence which is TRASHING our entire society!!!! They are a form of human pollution. God bless birth control!!!

God D A M N E D you fucking hard left Democrats!!! God DAMNED YOU!!!!

that post is what I was referring to, I just didn't want to quote it for it's stupidity, and what i said still holds. the OP wasn't asking about the politics of Austin, just what to visit. And you go off and rant because it happens not to be what you like. like i said , you're a rightwing dingbat. you went off the deepend, not me.

all good info except for one poster...

wow, for just one moment imagine your own MOST humble self in my shoes.

Some other guy's entire post consists solely of the idiotic and sort of meaningless gruntal:
"Uhhh...."

and you seek to ask more about his intended meaning.
So after that, YOU come in and cry that such a question about his meaning of "Uhhhhh" has something to do with "politics????"

Are you off your meds?

Sympathy to your parents. Against their hopes for the best, it has alas! turned out their cute li'l mushroom (you) IS indeed a blithering idiot after all.

what the fuck is wrong with you?

Tons of good advice in this thread. I live in the north Austin/Round Rock area, so I've been to tons of places up here.

The Salt Lick next to the Dell Diamond (Hwy 79) can serve alcohol since it's in Williamson County. Just went there last weekend.

6th Street is mostly for the younger college crowd. A large portion of it starting at I-35 gets closed down on weekend nights to allow pedestrian traffic only. If you go to 4th street, there are some bars for the older crowd.

The elephant room is a really cool jazz bar if you are into that. Been there a few times.

Juan in a Million was featured on Man Vs. Food on the travel channel. Never been, but it looks good.

Round Rock Donuts was also featured on Man Vs. Food. You definitely need to try that place one morning. They have a huge 3 lbs donut they specially make.

On Medical Parkway at about 38th St, you can try the Draughthouse Brewery. Nice beer garden that let's you take your beer and drink it outside. My friends usually take their trucks and we sit on the tailgate drinking the on-tap beers.

If you go up to the triangle, The Flying Saucer is a nice beer garden as well. They have the normal bar food with dartboards to play.

Someone also mentioned the Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls. That is one of the best bike rides if you are into that sort of thing. Just FM 1431 west to go straight there.

Let me know if you are looking for anymore places in North Austin/Round Rock.

Seems like we have a lot of Austinites. We should have a meet up. :)

No thanks. lol.

It has nothing to do with austinites, i just think "ATOT meetups" are really weird and don't see the appeal. I have enough RL friends that meeting up strangers from a forum just seems weird.

I love Austin though....wish I was still living there.

Agreed.....Pluckers is pretty damn good.

They used to have like 20 or 25 cent wings....but that was years ago.

I've only had Double Dave's in San Antonio, but I like Rockin' Tomato better.

Oh man I forgot about the Draughthouse, that's my favorite bar. Very chill, lots of seating outside, lots of great beer selections.

Magnolia is good (not as good as Kerbey Lane though) but I don't recommend getting pizza in Austin. No reason to visit Austin to get at best good pizza. Eat bbq, mexican, and hippie food instead.

Also, I went to your mom's burger joint a few months ago, absolutely delicious burgers. Long wait on the weekend but well worth it if it's nice outside (should be for the next few weeks).
