Anything I need to check out? I'll be there for two weeks.
Not a parody thread. If it is, I wouldn't get it.

Many of the bars are conveniently located on one street, I believe 7th street. That is all

Tfinch: everything you listed except partying.

6th street? Noted.
Thanks.

and the area around 6th... just at the east end (sort of) of 6th is Red River area for music, west towards Congress is the Warehouse district for the older than college crowd.

For hiking, you'll definitely need to do the Barton Creek Greenbelt and St. Edward's Park (my fav).

A couple of good drives are 2222 between 360 and Mopac, and Bee Caves Road (2244) between 360 and 620. Just don't try them during rush hour. :)

There's plenty of good eats. If you want BBQ, try The Salt Lick in Driftwood. For Tex-Mex there is Hula Hut. For pizza, give Home Slice a try. If you just go to yelp, you can find tons of restaurants depending on what you want.

I am not much of a bar hopper, so I can not help there. I also would recommend catching a UT football game, but they are not very good this year...

I was just there a few weeks ago, there's a Jazz bar called the Elephant Room. It's a hole in the wall but it had great music.

Food - pretty sure you can search any of these and find locations, menus or whatever.

for bbq, salt lick as mentioned above, but it's a drive.

For tex-mex, Maudies or Chuy's down south for some old school Austin Texmex, or Manuels downtown for a little bit nicer. You should try to get breakfast from a cheap mexican place at some point. Get migas if you've never had them. Trudy's (not real cheap, but not expensive either), Aranda's (really cheap) or Tamale House #3 (reeeeally cheap, but awesome). El Arroyo is sort of lame, and DO NOT go to Baby Acapulco except for drinks.

Hang out in afternoon/early night on South Congress. Lots of places to eat there. If you can time it, check it out on first Thursday, it gets a lot busier then.

NXNW for a brewpub with a pretty good menu.

For interior mexican (it's not quite the same as tex mex) Sazon on South Lamar for semi cheap, Fonda San Miguel if you want it nicer and more expensive. Fonda San Miguel has a really nice interior, lots of plants, skylights in the bar area, etc.

If you want upscale dining, Jeffrey's, 3 forks, or any number of downtown places.

There are a few places that have early shows on weeknights. Saxon Pub for the full band experience, probably like a 5 dollar cover. Very austin, bands are probably country/rock or blues/rock. The Wednesday crew at Z tejas is pretty good - very laid back, no cover, just 3 guys with guitars playing for tips. Not so loud. get a beer or two and some appetizers.

Catch a movie and eat and drink at an alamo drafthouse.

If you fancy a sports bar, Black Sheep (south lamar) for a loud friendly time when you don't care much about food, The Tavern (12th/Lamar) more middling. or Cover 3 which is an upscale place. yeah, I think an upscale sports bar is weird too. The food's really good there, but man is the beer selection lame.

Kerbey Lane Cafe.

Rudy's BBQ if you just want quick and delicious bbq. Otherwise, try Salt lick or County Line, but those are a bit further out.

Tex mex - Trudy's (sunday brunch buffet is really good) and Chuy's

6th st is where all the college kids go for bars. 4th st has a bit more of an older crowd.

If you're into beer, make sure you can make it to the Live Oak brewery for one of their tours - it's damn awesome, especially if it's still free. You can also keep an eye out for the 512 Brewery calendar and see if they have a tasting come up. Head out to Blanco on a Friday to make it to Real Ale's brewery tour.

hell, even rudy's is good bbq, and that's a convenience store. salt lick is interesting mostly because it's a dry county, so the place is BYOB. people roll up with kegs and 20 people, get the all you can eat barbecue, and then get loaded all afternoon.

if you want the best bbq you need to head south on 183 to lockhart. about 30 minutes or so, i'd estimate. smitty's market and kreuz market are the places to hit up.

hula hut isn't tex mex. it's a strange but tasty concoction. they're owned by the same people as chuy's (which is tex mex with new mex influence).

matt's el rancho never impressed me.

your public profile doesn't say where you're FROM.

If you're from anyplace in the USA south (phony "country" music), or east (where they talk too fast, with odd accent), then in that case Austin will be exciting to experience, even down to the bottom-of-barrel LBJ museum by UT Austin. Better to see acts at UT.

On the other hand, if you're from California, Oregon or Washington, then the most socially advanced place in Texas, which is definitely Austin, will seem like a a 20-year throwback Twilight Zone experience. Hey that's not "BAD," but IRL, be ready to APPRECIATE the very real difference.

I would love to re-import some of those old time value, once alive in California and now alive back there 1,800 miles east of us in Texas, BACK into California, to our extreme and desperate benefit, since all here has been lost utterly to the ultra-liberals (Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein regime) and the overrunning hordes (we're talking literally tens of millions, USA Gov't "official" counts of illegal Mexican immigrants be damned!) of illegal Mexicans.

Our lawmen flat out R E F U S E to enforce any border with Baja Cali. Especially Democrats like OBAMA. God Damn! It really does seem that the very utterly best place in the4 USA is lost to Mexico.

Blockade our BORDER N O W GOD DAMNED IT!!! RIGHT NOW!!! TONIGHT!!!!! And why not you hard left democrat pussies, we all know it's so you can force "amnesty" and voting rights for the teeming hordes, God DAMNED Y O U !!!! YOU WILLINGLY, KNOWINGLY, TOTALLY FUCKED OVER OUR WHOLE COUNTRY JUST TO GAIN VOTES OF MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL MEXICANS,

despite their most unwelcome presence which is TRASHING our entire society!!!!

God D A M N E D you fucking hard left Democrats!!! God DAMNED YOU!!!!

Very true. For mexican food I prefer Polvo's on South First or El Chile up on Manor by UT. Magnolia Cafe on South Congress is great for after hours eating, they are a 24 hr joint. The Salt Lick and Home Slice Pizza are well worth a visit too. Shady Grove is really nice to eat outdoors on a good afternoon. Walk around Zilker Park's hike and bike trail and grab a bite at Shady Grove afterwards.

I'll second the suggestion of hitting up the Alamo Drafthouse. They have a calendar online www.drafthouse.com and if anything at the Ritz interests you, do go. Otherwise hit up a "regular" movie at the Drafthouse up on South Lamar. I just checked myself and they are doing the Lord of the Rings Trilogy Dec 12th. I'm so there.

The Barton Creek Greenbelt is nice, especially after a rain. If you have time, a drive out to Pace Bend Park to hike and check out the lake would be nice too. It may be chilly but you can cliff dive there too if you have some balls. That same pass for Pace Bend will get you into Hamilton Pool, but both of those are much better in the summer when you can get into the water. Still pretty nice for hiking and soaking up beautiful nature. Spend a clear night out overlooking the 360 bridge over by 2222.
