Headache after intense cardio/sweating.

I've had this problem for years. I'm still not sure it's related to fitness levels or not, but when I am undergoing vigorous cardio, specifically with a lot of sweating, I will get a headache. If I continue the activity it just gets worse. It happened last night during a spin class. I was sweating hard from about minute 10 and at minute 40 I could feel this headache starting to creep in. I am in good shape and very well hydrated. I figure it's some weird blood pressure thing. I am eating fine, not otherwise prone to headaches. I take in moderate amounts of caffeine. I have no medical history or anything. It seems as if my body simply hits a point where it cannot sweat any more aggressively to shed heat and this is when the headache kicks in.

I googled and it seems a pretty common problem for a lot of people and is surely related to a high HR as well. Dunno what my blood pressure is. I know I have no heart ailments (had an echocardiogram a couple years back!).

Well go get e general checkup. If this is a result of high blood pressure then it's best you have it taken care of.

I did have a checkup two years ago and the doctor (who is, if anything, overly cautious) didn't mention any problems!

Just a guess, but are you drinking a sports drink or just water? I remember having a similar (albeit mild) problem back in house league soccer that went away when I switched from water to Gatorade.

Just water, but I'm definitely not short on electrolytes during a routine this short... I suppose trying some salt beforehand may not hurt, though.

I was getting headaches in TX during cardio sessions, the temp was the reason for that. I haven't had one since I moved to NY even while doing the same distances.

Are you running inside or outside?

How much water? I get flu-like symptoms (including a massive headache) if I'm dehydrated from working out.

This was inside. I do think it may be heat related, but I've had this after a summer of working out a lot outdoors and being really fit, so it could be that I'm simply not meant to live anywhere warm at all.

I drink quite a bit throughout the day and was well hydrated for this, I am really sure it's not water related.

Do you drink during the spin session? Because I read a few years back in a MTB mag, that a rider should drink approx. 8oz of water every 15 mins when riding hard. If you are sweating profusely for 1/2hr without fluid intake, it could still be a hydration issue. Or perhaps you are exceeding your HR target zone for too long?

I did I had a 750 ml of water the entire time 🙂

I was probably up near my max HR for most of the darn session!

It still sounds like dehydration to me. For that, take some extra salt with your food. Problem is, if it's hypertension, the salt could make it worse. Talk to a doctor.

I have some salt tabs I got from a race packet a couple years ago. I shoulid give them a shot, although I do drink quite a bit of soup and it's pretty high sodium 🙂

That could do it, I have experienced it before anyways. It wouldn't do any harm to start wearing a monitor, and start staying inside your target zone, and see if the head aches persist.

Good idea, I have wanted a heart rate monitor but have yet to spend the money on it! I really want a swimp3 first 😉
