Head units with motorized self-hiding faceplates?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knows whether there are any of these today. I'm talking about the head units with faceplates that automatically fold away and look like just a blank spot on the dash when you turn off the car.

I know kenwood used to sell these, naming it "D MASK" but I don't see any these days. I know they have a tendency to break eventually; were they unable to overcome that flaw, and just decided to give up?

alpine makes at least 1 im sure others do also

however it wont keep it from being stolen, a buddy of mine had his HU taken and it was the self hiding face one

They still get jacked. I know. I've been jacked twice.

That sucks... but actually I'm not really wanting it for security, I just want it because it looks stock when folded away, and I'm quite anal about the stock look. Also, the folding out motion is cool. 😀 I park my car in my garage at night, and in a very busy parking lot during the day.

I park my car in a garage at night and a busy parking lot in the day as well... It's too bad we do more than work and sleep otherwise i would have been ok.

My friend had a song one a while back.

And whilst they fold away leaving a 'blank' face, they are easy to spot.

Hiding the face does nothing really... if a thief is going to steal it, they're going to steal it. They either know enough to figure out what you have from looking at it or they dont care and just want to steal it - either way - you're out of luck. Get a removable one or full coverage ins.

Thanks for the reply, but as I said, I mainly want it for the stock look, not for the security. Besides, if a thief wants to steal something they might not care that much about whether the faceplate is off since it's not worth all that much.

D-Mask was the Sony Xplod series I believe.

Edit: I think D-Mask was Kenwood. But Sony had ALOT of flat black faces that were loaded with LED's underneath, then it flipped down to access the controls.

Yeah, I think I remember seeing those before too. But now when I go on Sony's website, I can't find any that have the blank faces. They just flip down to reveal CD slot, or detach. =/

i think they gave up on it.... if you want protection, go with those eclipse models that use a cd key... afaik, thieves know to leave em alone since they are such a PITA...

I buy my cars with already nice head units... (usually manufactured by alpine/clarion) then upgrade the stock speakers and add amps.
