Ok I have been looking at HDTVs and I am too cheap to pay full price for anything....
I found a 42" hdtv at a local retailer for 1999$ I loved it....then i decided i had better check with the peeps at anandtech. com and a few search engines. i ran across the tv for 1799$ shipped.....what ya think? I picked this particular tv because IMO it looked 200 times better than the wega we looked at at sears...and is bigger.

42"

then i realized that another tv i looked at that was 2999$ can be found for 2249$ shipped....These Guyz

any ideas or better suggestions? I will appreciate all comments...even flame toshiba if you please...i would like to here honest opinions.

BTW these guyz have good reseller ratings.

Hey Longcat,

Whats the deal with PM. This is a FORUM !! I am in the market for a HD TV and looking at similiar models. Anything you have to contribute would be interesting to me too.

I am looking at the 43 inch 4:3 rear projection screens. Thinking about Hitachi or Toshiba. Anyone have any experience with these ?

My best deal was at Continental Trade. I took their ad in for a Toshiba 61H71 to Sears during their 10 percent off sale. I got the TV that sells for $2699 ($2599 on sale) for $1980 - 10 percent plus $40 delivery.

If you order on the 'net you are in for a hassle in case of a defect. And you can do better at Sears if you wait for their 10 percent off sale.

Hi,

I was shopping for a rear projector last month and found this site: www.hometheaterspot.com . They have a group buy every month. It is run by Jason who works at Onecall. His price will be much better than OneCall. I was quoted a very good price for a Pioneer 53 inch HDTV for about a $1000 less than what Best Buy is selling them for ! All you have to do is sign up with the hometheaterspot.com forum. Call / email Jason at Onecall and tell him that you are a member of the Hometheaterspot forum. Right now he is running a January group buy which includes the Toshiba 50H81 that you are interested. This is the direct link for the group buy forum: http://www.hometheaterspot.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum&f=60 . Also while you are on the same site, I suggest you visit the toshiba forum and ask question around about the RPTV you are interested. It is a big purchase and you should definitely know the pros and cons of this unit.

By the way , OneCall is a very good company. If you go to either the Hometheater forum : www.hometheaterforum.com or www.avsforum.com, people highly regard Onecall as a top notch store. My experience from ordering at Onecall was also excellent.😎

I too was looking around for a hdtv, and I noticed this site from one of the threads on here, it has even better prices then continental trade... I was also looking around for the 50H81, which was 1999 at sams club, but this site has it for 1612.80... It also has the 61H71 for 1792...

Hey Heinrich you think sears would even pricematch with this yahoo store?? Was just a print out of their page enough? or do they need a number to call to check if it's in stock?

some of the tv's on that yahoo store are listed sooo low I really want to get like the 57HX81 or heck even the 65HX81 2419.20 for a 65" widescreen HD-tv thats just crazy! too bad sears doesn't seem to carry them, at least not on their site, any one know if they will order whatever you want? or some other B&M that will pricematch? and when is this 10% deal?

Be careful when shopping around the internet on the Toshibas HX series (top of the line RPTV Toshiba's). I read from www.hometheaterspot.com that there are no authorize dealer on the internet for the HX series. You must purchase them in your regular Hi End audio/video store authorized by Toshiba. You better ask Toshiba which stores are authorized to sell the HX line if you are interested on these RPTVs.

i just went to sears today to pricematch a dvd player i found on a website and the guy showed me a list of "we only pricematch with theese stores". on the list was best buy good guys and all the other bM stores.

whats up with that???

i read alot of people pricematch with sears but maybe the policies are different from store to store??

my family is looking for a old big screen TV for under 1000$ by a major name brand. Right now we're looking at the Samsung 54 inch Projectors that they have for 799$ at fry's. My dad bought the same exact one for his bar a couple weeks ago and he really likes it. I'm just wondering if there are any similar deals for big screen TV's under 1000$ out there. Doesn't have to be top of the line or one of the newer brands, anything big and under 1000$ will suit my parents just fine 🙂

Back to the original question, I am a HDTV owner. To me, these are important considerations:

1. I would not buy a 4:3 HDTV. When you are watching a true HD broadcast, you will not want it on a 4:3 screen. After all, why are you buying this TV? Isn't it for watching HD?
2. 3:2 pulldown is a must
3. Good quality internal line doubler. Since the HD programming is limited, you WILL watch regular programming. This is where the line doubler is most important.
4. More than one HD component video input. It is terribly annoying to have to keep unplugging & plugging in cables to switch HD sources. Take it from someone who knows! Direct TV and/or dish network, including your local OTA brioadcasts, and a PROGRESSIVE SCAN dvd player, and maybe a pc card to record HD to your hard drive (Personally, I love this. Just finished recording GI Jane off my local ABC). BTW, I suggest, if possible, when looking to buy a progressive scan dvd player, demo it on your model TV. there can be a great difference from tv to dvd player compatability issues, especially with progressive scan.

Any further questions?

BTW, that Toshiba seems to have the features, but you need to personally demo the tv, judge how YOU like it, & compare it to others in your price range. Also, look at the next step up, & see if you really notice a difference. Any Projection HDTV with smaller than 9" crt's, cannot reproduce all 1080 lines of resolution. Most of them have 7". The 9" are more expensive, but I thought you should know.

I have a Sony 57XBR10W, last year's model. IMHO, it has a poor line doubler, needs frequent adjustment, does not have 3:2 pulldown, has 7" crt's and only has 1 HD component input. Since I have directv, dishnetwork, Home Theater PC, & progressive scan dvd, it is a royal pain in the @ss.

And yet, I love my HDTV. It can be like the difference between color & black & white. It really is that dramatic.
Just my 2 cents, OK, my dollars worth.

I agree with some of what is said above. However:

- Good -internal- line doubler is not really needed. Examples:

For DVD, doesn't matter
For DTV and OTA, if you are using something like the Zenith DTV 1080 box, it has a great line doubler. This makes TVs like the Mitsu line look GREAT, even on DTV, which is always a problem.

- Multiple HDTV inputs. Yes, it would be nice, but switchboxes are available, and although some will argue, a cheap-o Radio Shack box works well.

As always, consider Sears, as they will pricematch Internet sites (search here, avsforum, etc, for tips), and often take off 10% on top, and sometimes not add for shipping.

Good luck! I love my RPTV.

I actually was just going to use my xbox as a progressive scan dvd player, the fact that the games support 16:9 is the main reason why I bought it. I kind of wish I would have held off on buying it tho, I probably will only play halo, and maybe GTA3 when it comes out on the xbox, but I paid retail for the thing... Even when I have a pretty nice computer system(other then the sad geforce2 GTS 64mb), damn impulse buys... Where are those little voices of reason when you need em??

Now that Mylle had problems at sears with pricematching I have a feeling I will have the same problem... 🙁

If you talk to a Sears salesperson and spice up the deal for him by going with an extended warranty, he might give you the pricematch. Just make sure you still come up ahead even when the extended warranty is added to the total cost. For a big purchase anyway like an RPTV, an extended warranty is a must IMO.

Just to let ya know, X-Box currently won't do Progressive Scan DVD playback. It will only output in 480i due to the lack of Macrovision in 480p mode. A hack is definitely possible, but for right now it isn't possible.

BTW- Most HDTVs out there today seem to only be able to display in 480p and 540p/1080i ... Are there any relatively cheap HDTVs that can natively display in 720p? ... I know some of the high end HDTV sets can do it, but I was looking more along the lines of a cheaper (read: around the $3000 pricemark) 34" Direct View (or any Direct View HDTV) that could do 720p natively.

I don't know where you herd that LiQiCE, but I haven't seen anyone say anything about 480p not working while playing dvds(so long as you have the high def pack)...
here's two that seem to say it works...

Mylle- it depends on the salesperson that you get. Keep trying.

Bartman - heck of a price for a 61H71. Continental Trade's prices have gone up a lot. I'm not sure I would buy an HDTV from a store.yahoo.com though.

Dukat1 - I chose 4:3 because I get a lot more inches for the money. I spent as much money as a 50H81 but I got 61". My 16:9 viewable area is even larger than the 50h81 for about the same amount of money. I personally feel that as long as you get a TV that does anamorophic squeeze, you are getting a better deal out of a 4:3 set. If I were buying *only* for DVDs I might possibly reconsider.

hdtv support isnt full yet is it? if ur willing to wait, just watch the hdtv prices fall in a few years to near ctr levels. and if ur lookin' for a new tv, ctr is on its way out cuz the government set a deadline some years from now that broadcaster have to switch to HDTV... but we know they'll extend the deadline since so many of us have ctr and are keeping them.

Sears does have the Toshiba 50h81, so you can try and go and price match. Not sure if they will go from $2499 to $1699 though, worth a try...

Sorry Bartman but LiQiCE is right, I believe Microsoft Had orignally intended for it to support progressive scan for dvd movie but in fact it does not. Here's an article from reputable source that get it right from the Horses mouth and Here and Here and Here here even right here on anand tech. their is some speculation that it could support progressive scan thru a firmware upgrade if one was to be created.

just one other thing to look for when purchasing a hdtv capable set...make sure it has either an ieee 1394 (firewire) input or a DVI input. while there has not been an agreement on which standard will be used for encryption in the future (and there is no guarantee it will use either of these) you might as well keep yourself in the ballgame. otherwise you may be forced to watch down-rezzed versions of programs in a few years if your tv does not have the proper inputs for set top boxes or other devices from which you will receive your programming.

i would probably pick up one of the toshibas (either 50h81/50hx81 or 57h81/57hx81) but as they have no such inputs i will hold off until next fall when their new models will have this feature included. not to mention that the whole encryption format war may be somewhat closer to decided.

🙁 thanks for the links ItsADisease... Oh well, I'll see how the picture is then, if it sucks I'll just have to save up for a dvd player now too...

I just came back from a Sears in IL, and they do pricematch with online stores(at least at this one), but you need the number to the place, and the shipping and tax costs... I just emailed hyperaudio asking for their number (I couldn't find it anywhere on their site) plus the costs. I'll let you guys know how it goes 😀

we're interested in home theater system (for movies, not shows or tele) as well.

how come home theater projectors,
like this projector, arent as popular? with projectors people can make the screen as big as they want or plug in the vid out from the computer, and use it as a monitor display.

If I remember correctly, the bulbs in the projectors do not last long and they are very expensive.

We have several Toshiba projectors at work and the bulb only has 500 hours of lifetime (I think, it's really short). Each bulb cost around $500.

If you get the Entertainment Projector, please get bunch of spare bulbs.. you are going to need it.

They are awesome for movies....

just cost too much and high maintenance.

I am also in the market for projection tv but an HDTV. There is no set date for cable companies to broadcast in HD so Im not interested in getting HD. The 2 tvs that interest me the most are the Toshiba 50in model #50a61 and the Hitachi 50 in model #50gx30b. Can anyone tell me where I can get the best deal on any of these with an exteneded warranty?
THanx
