*climbs on soapbox*

Hey all,

I honest to goodness only posted that link to the "proposed changes" to HDTV just to make people aware of it. I'm not for or against buying an HDTV set.

I like the hot deals community, really! I came across that article a few weeks ago, and when I saw this post, I thought "better let other folks at least know about it".

In no way whatsoever was this meant as a thread-crap. I have no idea about the validity of the article itself, but it seemed like something the MPAA would try to do.

Anyways, I hope everyone can just get along, and keep sharing those great deals!

*steps off soapbox*

Cheers,

-Matt

mattlear has the right attitude about it. Don't come off like you responded the correct way! Anyway, the propaganda is DVI! Haven't you noticed? EVERY magazine has used the word "obsolete" in reference to current HDTVs. Coincidence? NO. That's what the purveryors of DVI WANT you to think, that if you buy a non-conforming set it will be useless. Read the articles. Even the ones that aren't trying to be "scaremongers" STILL tell you that it is going to be obsolete, and that you should wait (The exact opposite of what you should do!)! NONE tell you that if you don't wait, it wont happen. The only way for DVI to be accepted is to turn the mass public against the alternative, and the scare tactic has worked quite nicely. As soon as it's available in the latests sets, the older sets will get discounted. BUY THE DISCOUNTED SETS. Leave them with the crap they can't sell. Then watch the tables turn as DVI sets are discounted! It won't happen with the mass hysteria DVI has caused. Actually getting people to scare other people for them is a nifty side effect. The idea that it will demise the current standard is also wrong. All DVI sets will have analog component video also, so the standard will be alive and well. It's the DVI devices that use the newer (digital) DVI connector that won't have a way to interface with an older set.

About the personal attacks: Leave them to a PM next time. This member name is used by a group of ppl in GA, not just one. Please tell me the offending posts, so I can change them to your liking.

PS: Don't tell me you haven't noticed Macs in every comic strip or TV show, I saw the new iMac on a Barbara Walters interview the other day. And it's not because of a Mac's perferability for content creation, Apple has paid for it's media presence. It's the same damn thing. Or would you have actually thought this? "Walters is a sofisticated journalist choosing/using a Mac and not a PC."

Hi-Def broadcasts get into your house in one of 3 ways: 1) over the air 2) dss 3) digital cable. (This excludes home playback of recorded HD material)

So what sources have DVI now or in the near future? Shouldn't that have a bearing on wether or not to buy a non-DVI set? If DVI sources are everywhere, including homes, I say go DVI. If all set top decoders, dss receivers, and cable boxes (BTW, who gets to pay for these multi-hundred doallar boxes?) need to be replaced before DVI replaces analog, I say don't hold your breath. Get a good HD set now.

Good Point. I think DVI will give a superior picture, being all digital, as opposed to the analog component output/input. But it will take some time for DVI to spread and catch on. Is it worth the wait? I don't really know. HDTV's with a good analog source look great to me. I haven't yet been able to see an HDTV driven by a DVI source in any store. Hitachi is coming out with DVI HDTV's this fall (August).
6/3/2002 NEW YORK? Hitachi unveiled an expanded assortment of widescreen HDTV rear-projection displays for the press, including three fully integrated HDTV sets, which marks the company's return to that market segment.

All use Hitachi's top-of-the-line digital chassis, and include both a Digital Visual Interface (DVI) connection with HDCP content protection and an IEEE-1394 (iLINK) interface with DTCP content protection. The dual digital connections are also included in the company's SWX and UWX series of widescreen DTV monitors. Link

I imagine other HDTV manufacturers will do the same.

Zenith is coming out with a Sat TV decoder box with DVI. Link

Don't know when DVD players will have a DVI link. I imagine soon, but don't know. Or maybe not until HD-DVD becomes a reality. Link

Many unknowns here, which makes buying anything at this point a tough decision.

Looking to pick up a HDTV 32". Looks like it's down to a Samsung or a Panasonic... is this a mistake? :)

Has anyone ever set up an HDTV set with their PC? The reason I am picking one up so that I can possibly use it as a monitor. Currently I use an ATI AIW to output to a reg. TV, but the picture is horrible. need to be 100% sure that HDTV has high enough resolution (and that I can output that rez through coax. from my AIW)... any experiences?

the resolution on the tv will be limited by the resolution of the cable of which you will be using to connect the comp to the tv. the best option out of the AIW (assuming you dont have the 8500) will be via s-video, and that can only carry about 480 lines horizontal. it will be ok on the tv, but far from real hdtv

Hmm... just to make 100% clear, VGA (640Hx480V) resolutions are not possible? I have my TV plugged into my AIW Radeon, and the text is all fuzzy. I figured that HDTV (some are even labeled as HDTV monitors) may allow me to do that... please someone tell me that this isn't the case!!!!!!!!!!!

rawsusi, all you need is a vga-->component transcoder and you are golden, you in no way would use svideo like the other poster said.

rca makes a good transcoder and its found for around 50 on ebay. you can use a program called powerstrip to ouput the resolution you want, by all means get the tv, you should visit www.avsforum.com for their HTPC (home theatre pc) section and search around there, they have a great faq here that would most likely answer most of your questions

Gosharks and all,

Have you guys seen the "new wave" of LCD projection tv's? I saw one of these panasonic 40" ones at a local Video Only and it was freaking gorgeous!!! It's actually advertised as a LCD tv/ PC monitor!! I would imagine when they get a bit cheaper they will totally replace the current projection tv's. The screen was so bright I had no idea it was a projection set, it was as bright as the Sony 40" XBR that was next to it. I may wait until they become more mainstream and drop a bit in price, but they are awfully tempting......:

Not only am I a HUGE sushi freak, but I am also a VERY happy owner of a Samsung TSL3294 HDTV. You will love it. Progressive DVD and Prog Xbox games are the BOMB!
