I am looking to get an HDTV to watch DVDs and things on. I was out looking at them, and for the price I didn't see anything that could compare to this Samsung:
Samsung HDTV

Anyone out there have any experience with HDTVs? For the same approx price $4000 I could get a 42in plasma, but another 8 inches sure is a lot of TV.

the hln507 is a great TV for the money.

There isn't much that can compete for the price except for a pioneer elite or mitsubishi diamond series 55-65".

Amused,

I used to think that way as well. But I convinced my folks to buy the panny 50" HD plasma. Simply stunning really. I've got the 507 as well. Very nice, rainbows get to me sometimes but I ignore them. The mits is still the one I use for movies/hdtv.

Rainbows are seen by a minority of people. I never have seen them.

Plasmas are nice in a lighted room, but create a theater like atmosphere and the blacks are all far too gray for my tastes.

Rainbows?

I am not dropping this kind of coin on a TV to have it suck. It must be damn near perfect.

Also where do you guys buy your big screens?

If you are worried about rainbows, go to your local Samsung dealer, pull up a chair and watch a varied assortment of high contrast material on the DLP. Most people don't see them. And among those who do, it's usually very infrequent.

Cant wait till i can afford one (college student).... If anybody doubts DLP go see a movie in DLP at the closest cineplex.... Saw my second movie ever in DLP (pirates of the carib) the other day and was totally blown away at all the extra detail you get over regular projection.

How do you know if it's DLP?

extra detail my @ss. resolution of current dlp is lower then film. during trailers you can see pixel blocks in the text. when theres a bright white area you can see the pixels and the gaps between em if you sit anywhere near the front. its not there yet. dlp better have better resolution then film to justify upgrades for theaters.

and consider the pirates of the carribean was filmed on film. why would digital projection of film show extra detail.

They carry Mits now? Do they pricematch to HHGregg?

I would wait until they standardize the connection between HD cable boxes, and HD TVs. I had a friend telling me they plan to use DVI as a standard in the near future, and everyone who owns an HDTV without DVI will be SOL.

Can anyone here verify this?

That's been up for discussion for some time but it appears DVI will be it. I see and hear of more sets with that than with Firewire.

I wouldn't wait, myself. And, for $4k, I'd look at the biggest, bestest Mitsubishi I could find! :D

They've always carried mits. Pioneer elite plasmas, samsung, runco, all the goodies. I'm sure they would price match. I generally push for about a 20% discount.

I've given them too much business and referrals. That's a good thing though.

I didn't see a website for Ovations. Any idea if there is one in Mpls/St.Paul or something like it?

I don't feel like paying retail price at Best Buy.

Sh!t, now I gotta get an HDTV, seems like the thing to do nowadays. I just got a 32" Sony Trinitron in 2000 and I'm still impressed with that. What sort of hookups do HDTVs have? I have my DVD player hooked up with component and my PS2 hooked up with S-Video. Do HDTVs have better hookups?

there is a big trailer at the begging of the movie that says DLP like the ones you see for THX
