Goddam you Simpsons

Actually that is Fox's problem. They won't be displaying ANYTHING high-definition until the Fall. Even then though I'm not sure an animated series will be reworked in high-def. The benefits of poorly drawn characters in HD would be minimal, with perhaps the exception of better color and a wider viewing angle :)

Oh, and one more important thing, if you don't have a progressive scan DVD player, you'll want one. On my TV, the difference was staggering. If anyone ever tells you that progressive scan is just a marketing ploy, they've never seen a 65" TV displaying 480i vs. 480p.

Not necessarily true. Depends on the TV. Some are actually better with an interlaced signal (samsung DLPs come to mind)
I can't prove or disprove that, but I can tell you that on mine, I had a bunch of friends over watching Spiderman back when I first got my TV. I got the new DVD player because I heard it would work better, but it didn't look any different than the previous DVD signal, and everyone in the room mentioned it. So I wentinto the display properties, and that's when I realized you have to actually turn on the feature (there's something to be said for reading a manual). WOW! Everyone in the room said they noticed a HUGE difference. It looks amazing. It looks as good as Sopranos in HD! However, nothing - and I mean nothing - looks as good as a CBS football game in HDTV. It's as real as if you were there. Incredible. Fox is good, but CBS' football coverage is in a league of its own.

Obviously your TV does not have a built in line doubler, or it was somehow not functioning correctly.

Yep, almost all HDTV monitors sold now have built in line doublers. Some are better than most DVD players. At any rate, progressive scan is becoming more and more pointless on DVD players.

Unless you have a multiscan HDTV that displays a progressive scan DVD directly to the output stage with ever touching it processing wise leaving it in all its 480p glory.

*cough*
<---mits 65" diamond owner back when they were dual-scan.

Newer HDTVs have much better quality with input sources such as cable TV. I just got a Toshiba 34HF83 that replaced my old Toshiba TW40X81 (built in 2000). Its cable TV picture is MUCH better.

Then you probably have a sony TV or some other very poor linedoubler model.

:)

Not a slam on your TV...some just aren't that good with 480i and excel in other areas.

I mainly just don't want Homer to be stretched to fatter than he already is.

If you guys would check my sig under "My OTHER God Box," you'd see that I have a Mitsubishi. I would never disgrace my home with a Sony product!!! ;)

Ah...the 65411. One of the worst line doublers ever. That's why you absolutely need a progressive scan player.

I have the 65908 (diamond).

The great thing about your set however is that it will display 480p natively and HD is top notch.

I do but we recently moved and opted for cable tv/internet instead of DirecTV satellite.

So I got a ReplayTV 5040 to replace my beloved DirecTIVO.

RIP!

Upon further research it looks like analog cable will suck on this TV, so I guess I'll wait.
