WE were going to buy it in the past but we waited too long and the deal had gone away...now it is back for memorial day

Overall I have heard acceptable things about the Hitachi 50 inch LCD 50v710

That said, there are two ther potentially appealing choices:

The second is Panasonic's 52'' LCD PT-52LCX65. It looks great but I can't find any reviews on it. I will only have our experiences to judge it by.Panny

The third is the good ole Samsung 50'' DLP. Although I would blindly praise this model, after seeign 1080i source material pumped thorugh it I was dissapointed with the picture. It seemed too dark but again, we will check on Monday one final time. Sammy

Basically, the Hitachi has caught our eye because it is exceptionally bright and it did exceptionally well with both 1080i and 720 source, providing sharp and accurate representation. Darks leave a little to be desired, but it was far off from the samsung's performance.

We will be takign a computer with HD material, assumign that they let us, so we can use material that we are already familar with and gauge the displays as much as one can in a store:D

Until then, what are your opinions?

And none of that fanboi crap. I know DLP is good. I saw EpIII using DLP the other day. That said, IMO the Hitachi is giving the Sammy a run for its money

I gasped at "50 inch LCD" when I realized that it's a rear projection :(

Call me when there's a 50+" LCD flat panel

Good call on taking the PC with HD material there

want a tip? Search around for the JVC 52" HDILA sets. They are severely marked down and are awesome sets.

But from your list I would go with the Sammy. If you watch sports or action movies in HD, this will be your favorite set too.

First rule of TV shopping is do NOT base your decision on how they look in store.

There's essentially no chance whatsoever that those sets are properly calibrated.

I have to take source I am familar with. Honstely, the Samsung looked like crap compared to the Hitachi (they were next to each other) with the 1080i source they were using

Can you somehow burn a DVD? It won't hold much, but will still hold quite a bit to test out.

You can't even judge those things accurately (with the exception of viewing angle).

Ignore how they look in the store.

The Hitachi is brighter. Everyone has their own favorites. I prefer the Samsung because it performs so well in HD with lots of action. The Hitachis tend to lag a bit. Buy whichever one you like the most. But please don't pay retail.

It has to be retail:( Don't ask why.

I did not know about the lagging. I will but some action scenes on there to test it out;)

Indy 500 is tomorrow, go to the store while it's on

They'll probably display that in HD ... cars going 200+MPH is pretty fast action.

Seems like you should be able to calibrate any set to within the range you like... But the ones on display are probably grossly mis-calibrated. If you like the Samsung so much, get that one and then use the test patterns on Avia Home Theatre or something to get it right.

Wish I could help, but we don't have a nice TV. 27" Zenith. :p

Old RCA's are well built.

My parents still have a 1981 23" RCA in their bedroom. Havn't had to repair it once.

Aah, I see.

Indy 500 would have been great in 720P
