HDTV vs. Plasma. What is better and why?

Ok, what is better for picture quality? An HDTV or a plasma TV? I've seen HDTV at Best Buy and at a Bose store at my local mall. It didn't look ALL that incredible. As for plasma I can't really say but plasma looks really really expensive.

Plasma

Pros: Not as large as HD. Can give HD quality.

Cons: Probably will burn out in 4 years. Must buy midrange models to get Hd capabilities. Expensive. No built in speakers. May require professional installation.

HDTV

Pros: cheaper than plasma per inch. Lots of models out there. Speakers built in.

Cons: big.

are you sure you didn't see a DVD loop of HDTV material at BestBuy? If so, you didn't see HD quality. Dood, HDTV is that damn good......

That sucks. Those things are big investments. Not many people could afford buying a new one every 5 years.

Plasma will most likely give you better picture quality on tv/dvds - mostly due to less tweaking involved and better uniformity. Plasmas generally don't do true high-definition (1920x1080) though - their resolution is usually much lower. So a HDTV should give you better picture quality on HD broadcasts. If you are talking rear-projection hdtv, expect to have to do a lot of tweaking to get good image quality.

what are you talking about? HDTV is a standard. Plasma is a type of visual display. Plasmas can handle the HDTV standard.

Like was said. You are confusing HDTV which is a standard to the display medium which can be plasma, LCD, tube, projection, etc.

Not all plasmas (like the gateway $3000 one for instance) can handle a true HD signal. Some are limited to 480p and downconvert higher res signals. The real HD plasmas look really nice but also cost a lot (>6000). Unless you have the money to burn I think for the time being tube (my preference) or RP HD is better until plasma costs go down and lifespan goes up.

plasma is for kicks, if you have money to burn then plasmas for you. its contrast is sh*tty indeed. blacks? try grey. image quality is bad bad bad. bang per buck is a tad sad. many aren't all that high resolution to boot.

Isn't HDTV simply a resolution standard? Saying HDTV vs Plasma is sort of self-defeating because Plasma televisions support the HDTV standard.

Edit: Holy crap, was I slow in typing that. :frown:

What are the display types currently on the market?

Plasma
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
Digital Light Processing (DLP)
Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

How do front and rear projection fit into this? Front would be like an overhead projector like a movie theatre, correct? What's rear projection, then? Same technology, only from behind/inside the TV?

The Plasmas I have seen are all grainy looking. I would not get one unless space was a concern

Plasmas and LCDs can't display true blacks. Once you get it in a dark room, it looks washed out.

DLP is where it's at now.

Plasmas do NOT "burn out" in 4 years. Their estimated lifespans are actually pretty similar to standard TV sets. There are also plenty of plasmas with built in speakers - MOST people who buy a $4000 TV already have a $$$ home theater setup, so we'd actually prefer the display not to have cheap speakers built in, FYI.

You can buy an HDTV plasma, but not all plasmas are HDTV.

The picture quality is up in the air right now - a lot of the cheap plasmas do not look as good as a standard HDTV set. However, the improvments over the last few years have been dramatic, and $5000 will get you a pretty sweet looking plasma display.

Their biggest competition is LCD technology, which is getting bigger and better as well.

IMO, you just can't beat a plasma for the coolness factor...

You know I finally got a chance to check out the 50" Samsung DLP at Best Buy over the weekend, and I'm not sure I was impressed.

The color and brightness was absolutely uniform. However, I noticed a strange phenomenon in high contrast scenes (bright against dark). There was some visible noise in the light colored areas - like somebody took a toothpick and rapidly vibrated it against the screen.

It wasn't always noticeable, but when it was present it looked crappy.
