Hdtv + ups?

I have one of these that I'm not using anymore. Can I use it for my HDTV?

Had some lightning strikes over the weekend, put a nice little halo around the edges of the screen for a few hours. The old strip needs to go, but should I buy a new one?

Well, just double check your TV doesn't draw 200 watts 😉 I believe the one I'm running is a 750VA model. But, I guess I'm in the same boat power wise since my receiver is plugged into it as well.

The manual says 165W. I should check on the DVD recorder, and see what it draws.

EDIT: 20W for the DVD

That UPS will do more harm than good during a lightning strike, the capacity it is designed for is too low for the load you want to use it for.

What kind of harm can it do?

Can you offer any better alternatives?

Products like UPS are designed for what the expected usage or load will be. If you look at the UPS you have it is spec'd for 200 watts but that doesn't mean it is capable of supporting 200 watts all the time, it is closer to 150 watts. The parts inside the unit will be chosen to support that load. If your load is close to the limit you run the risk of parts failing not from surges but from everyday usage.

Running a UPS for a television really doesn't prevent damage, what you want is good surge prevention and stand alone surge protectors are often better than a UPS and have higher ratings. The tripp lite protectors with isobar are some of the best in the business.
