or just get the ATI HDTV wonder for like $12x.xx from Dell with coupon and such.
It also comes with software too

I bought this HDTV tuner card for $99 but have been too busy to play with it 
I bought it for the price, QAM and my cable company doesn't scramble local OTA channels. So I should be able to plug in the coax cable into the TV tuner card and watch HDTV local channels without an antenna and not upgrading to HDTV cable service.

Wow, that's pretty crazy. so basically if I buy this, I can plug my cable into it, and get HDTV (assuming provider doesn't 'scramble' - what does that mean?)

This only works on media center edtion os right? I have local hd ch free over the air where I live (sac), I just buy a zoom hd rec at ebay and watch hdtv but I want to get this so I can record shows like a dvr.
beyond tv 4 can record like MCE, but its not out yet, and they didnt release when. probably in the next 1-2 months. same for sagetv 3, also not out yet. both these new revisions will support ota hdtv recording.
yea i forgot to mention, it works with watchhdtv on windows xp. this app only allows you to watch ota hdtv, but not record it. very stable and its free and uncluttered.
Not all TV tuner cards that are perfectly compatible with Win XP Home/Pro are compatible with MCE. However, I am pretty sure that all TV tuners compatible with MCE are compatible with XP Home/Pro.
As far as I know, MCE requires hardware MPEG-2 encoding. That's why not all TV cards are compatible wih it.
The Antenna Zenith ZHDTV1 does a decent job if your around 20-Maybe 30 miles of the HD feeds.
You can check www.antennaweb.org for how far away they are. Be sure to look at the D signals for digital.
If you live a little farther get a Channel Master attic antenna.
Avoid TERK they bite.

I just got done reading the stuff on the aver web page. I'm confused now. Do you need a seperate tuner for analog channels, or is that for windows MCE only?
i don't trust any of them...
i haven't found a tv tuner yet that would actually give you a good picture without all the pixelation.

Rossman you gotta try that card out with cable for me. I'm looking to getting one myself but only if it will work with cable.

I have the older 120 version of this card. it works well since the addition of the time-shifting software. You need a good antenna depending on where u live. and there kind of expensive.

Only the Fusion (3 Gold and higher) and MyHD (130 and higher) cards work with QAM (cable). All others at this point can only do OTA (antenna). The HD channels you can get through cable is a big YMMV. Basically you should be getting whatever isn't encrypted, which should be all the basic network channels (FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS). If you're lucky, you might also get INHD1,2, Discovery HD, ESPN HD, HBO HD, Showtime HD, and whatever else is unencrypted in your area, although technically you should be subscribing to get these extra channels (they are normally encrypted). Check your local listings to see what's available in your area. To get encrypted channels, the only way to currently get them is to subscribe to HD service from your cable company and use their box or a CableCard.

I'm super confused now.
I got my friend to order the Fusion5 Gold. He has MCE on one computer and XP pro on another. IF he installs the fusion 5 on the MCE comp wil he get analog channels? Should I tell him to install it on the XP pro comp? This will be his first and only TV tuner.

If your friend is using MCE to watch TV, he needs a separate analog card to watch analog channels (even though the Fusion can tune analog channels, MCE will only allow it to tune HD over antenna--not cable or satellite, which is why a separate analog card is needed). However, if the Fusion program that came with the card is being used, then both analog and HD (over antenna or cable--not satellite) can be seen using that program.
Now the problem's that your friend is using DirecTV. The Fusion Card can only display HD using antenna or cable--not satellite because the signal is encrypted and the tuner is inside the DirecTV box. For regular (non HD) DirecTV, MCE (or another program using XP) can be used by using any analog tuner that's compatible with it and using an IR blaster or serial cable to control the box. So there's no point in getting the Fusion in this case, because you can only get analog signals in this way.
To get HD using DirecTV, you need to have an HD DirecTV box (and possibly an extra sat dish for the locals, but I'm not 100% sure)--but I don't think you can get the HD into your computer because you'd need to have a component or DVI input (which I don't think currently exists for normal tuner cards). So the best way to have PVR functionality with DirecTV is to get a HD DirectTIVO box (but this doesn't use the PC).
