HDTV shopping sucks

Well, in the end, we were not impressed by the Samsung DLP's. The colors were just too washed out comapred with the lucious LCD colors. That said, the difference in black levels was not as bad as I previously thought on LCDs. This of course was based on an INHD 1080i stream that was pretty flawed🙁

Anyways, the TV my dad was most interested in at first was this Hitachi, except that the one he was interested in has HDMI and a built-in tuner for OTA stuff.

Hitachi Hitachi UltraVision 50"

After awhile though, he began to comment that it seemed to be too big🙁 The damn thing was gorgeous and has a very nice > 16x9 AR, great contrast, vivid colors, respectable blacks, and a respectable viewing angle. 1080i looked nice, but 720p was GORGEOUS on it.

Anyways, its still up the misses to decide, but in case she doesn't like the Hitachi, he was interested in this 44'' LG. Overall, the featureset looks great, but the setup at CC was pretty bad, so we'll have to go back to check it out again.
LG 44" Widescreen DLP

I just wanted to see if anyone had any relevant input before I go to AVSforum

Could it be that the Samsung just wasn't setup properly. My friends Plasma looked pretty crappy when he first got it. A little tweaking did a lot of good.

well, that's really odd goosemaster, cause i personally though the samsung DLP had the best colors out of all the HDTVs i saw, not just the DLPs. it might have been set up wrong at the store, but you should check into it again. that's what i own btw, the 50" samsung DLP (HL-5063W)

Basically, if it matters, the source on the Sammy was 1080i courtesy of inhd

I am starting to get very interested in teh LG. It is a new panel that supposedly has great darks.

The LG and anotehr Hitachi (the model pictured above) had 720p material showing..and wow..it was killer😛

Out the question....too much $$$

30" widescreen high definition CRT Tube.

CRT front projector......LCD and DLP is not up to snuff just yet. I love deep blacks and unless your willing to spend $20,000 for Sony's latest projector then I would stick will CRT which can do 1920 x 1080.

Rear projectors aren't that great but I would still get a CRT based one even though they weigh a ton.

LCD and DLP are for fools. 🙂

goose goose goose

every tv is made to look good in the showroom..its after a calibration where the t.v. can shine/fail. dlp's are not as good as lcd's when it comes to black level performance...you can't judge one stores floor model thats been fuked around with.

your picture is only going to be as good as your source...my hitachi looked like crap till i calibrated it..now it outshines every tv...

lg wouldnt be a good choice...

philips has a nice model 51p9363 or somethin..another good tv..but more for normal tv viewing..whereas my hitachi is better for movies

in the end..let ur dad choose what he thinks is best and never let him learn any different..ignorance is bliss..ive given u good advice in previous posts..use it

and dear GOD...dont get a damn projector..who cares if your screen is 100' if it looks like sh!t

Well, It'll also drop the price off of last year's Sammys as dealers will be looking to liquidate to make room for the new stock.

The Hitachi is very nice. I'm not a big fan of DLPs myself although the Samsung Captain Kirk is gorgeous.

You might want to wait until May though for the new 1080p Samsung DLPs to arrive.

So we should go with the Hitachi?

Maybe the lighting wasn't that bad after all. The Hitachi LCD outshined it immediately, but I attributed it to the bad light.

I would suggest looking at a Panasonic 50" DLP set. I believe Sams is carrying them now at a good price. HD2+ chip, 8 segment color wheel (only model with 8 I think), and what is considered by many the best looking picture on DLPs. Tweeter also sells them. If you can find a shop with HD hooked up (this goes for any TV), get the remote and play around in the settings. Check the different modes and play with the levels. I personally love the Panasonic DLP but it's by no means the only good looking set out there. It really comes down to your eyes (or whomever is dropping the cash) because that is what is most important here. You can read all day about DLPs having better blacks but if you don't see it, who cares?

While I agree brightness is a good feature, it's not exactly the most important to many people. They are all pretty bright so it's more in the details, skin color, and gradients. Plus, in most shops, you are looking at it in fairly unrealistic lighting compared to your house.

Also, I'll say this. They look big in your house when you get it. It might look too big. The first few nights, it might be difficult to watch it's so big. But trust me, you adjust fairly quickly and those issues pretty much become moot. I thought my 50" was huge at first. A month later I thought, "I could have gone a little bigger."

Good luck. I spent 2 or 3 months looking everywhere at sets, generally multiple times. Not much fun until you pull the trigger and get it in the house. Also, the more read on AVS the more you'll talk yourself out of a set. At some point, you just have to pick on that looks best to you.

As a sidenote, showroom floors of large department stores are notoriously bad to compare sets. The store itself is bright, the TVs are usually miscalibrated and put on some super-bright mode that sends the picture quality and contrast down the sh!tter. When you find the ones that you like, try to find a store with better lighting conditions that lets you play with the TV's setttings.

Exactly. I've come to find that Worst Buy is the best place to measure TV's side by side in realistic lighting. Then I go purchase from somewhere else. 😛

Or someone who is fond of lightbulb-usage in homes😀

Projectors can be superior, but they certainly have their place. They are by no means suitable for every situation.
