My dad's planning on getting an HDTV set but he's not sure which ones are good. I already told him about the pros and cons of plasma/LCD/rear-projection, but I have no idea which companies make good sets of each type. does anyone know? or know of a place where i can get that kind of info? thanks.

i wanna get a mitsubishi or pioneer elite series down the road. but first i need to get a real job, and a house to put it in 🙂

I got THIS a few weeks ago. It is very nice. I wish I had $6,000. for one of those plasma teevee, but this was in my budget and I am very happy with it.

🙂

Isn't the new mandate for HDTV broadcast like 2006?

Unless your dad needs a new TV now, I'd wait. When everyone starts buying them, the price is going to drop (I know it is always dropping, but I think there will be a big dip).

The mandate is for DIGITAL television not High Def.
Oh and I'm gonna have to go with Hitachi since I own a 51SWX20B 🙂

Love my Toshiba 65HX83. Excellent set, and the stretch modes are better than most.

The stretch mode on our Tosh 51H83 is the best I?ve seen yet. Can?t even tell it?s stretched anymore. 🙂

Heh, that's the exact TV I have.

Mitsubishi makes one of the best HDTVs..

But you have to get the DiamondScan series, because they have a bigger guns. I think typical gun size is 7 inches, the DiamondScan has 9 inch guns..

You need to be little more specific about your question, Because it all depends on the price..

i have a sony it is good to lazy to find out the model# but, its a projectiontv and its very good and its was under 1700$,some sony models are good and cheap you just have to make sure what you are getting,
just avoid anytihng WEGA if you get sony

I have a Panasonic, I think the model # is PW53x53... I like the set. Although the next set I buy will be something that is not prone to burn in... I am paranoid of getting burn in and I hate being paranoid.

whats wrong with WEGA?

happy with the 3 year old Toshiba 57H81 for main HT and brand new Sony 46" (something510) for the bedroom...

standard cable is noticeably better on the newer Sony (both signals are coming straight from the wall - the feed for the sony is split between cable modem and cable signal)...

HD picture on both is superb...

I just got the new Infocus 4805 projector ($1250) and am very impressed with it. My non-tech savvy wife is even more stunned and she cannot help talking about it. She's been bugging me to get some new movies to watch on it.

I've got an LCD RPTV which has a nice picture but the FPJ really blows it out of the water with a 100" picture.

Here's what I recommend:

Get a Mitsubishi. I have one in my sig (labeled "My 'Other' God Box) that I own. It's great. Mitsubishi's use Hitachi tubes (the best), so you would think, "Hey, why not just get a Hitachi?" The reason is because they're freaking expensive.

I would recommend getting a set that natively supports 720p, which mine doesn't. This is the one thing I would have liked to have looked for. If you ever play a video game on it, most display 720p nowadays, while few display 1080i. Such is life.

Also, look at how it displays worse TV signals. Much of your viewing will be non-digital, most likely, so make sure you like how that looks.

Honestly, I wouldn't even consider a Plasma or an LCD TV if I could afford one. They're just not worth it. LCDs have issues with dead pixels and ghosting, and plasma TVs have issues with DYING after 3 years or so, and are TERRIBLE with burn-in. If you leave your TV on just once with an image on it, you can basically expect to see that forever.

I just bought this. and so far I think it is great! The only complaint I have is the top of the television isn't flat, there is a slight curve, so I had to find a different place for my center speaker.
