I'm looking to buy an HDTV between 50-55 inches. I've been looking at the widescreen models, and plasma and projection TVs. I read a bunch of posts on the forums, which turned me off to plasma screens. I read about the new Toshiba LCOS 57" tv, but it's a bit outside my price rance. I can't really spend more than $7k for a TV. I was wondering what the best widescreen 50-55" HDTV on the market is, in your opinion. Also, should I go rear projection or plasma?

Thank you for your suggestions.

plasma is cool if you want a status symbol tv...however they dont last nearly as long as FP tv's...7k for a 50" will get you a very nice set, I like mitsubishi. Lookin into the 65511, 65" of pure extacy

that mitsuibishi is a RP not an FP , people on this forums dont know what they are talking about when it comes to tv, most of these lemmings will just tell you to get a wega.

i suggest you visit www.avsforums.com and look at their advice.

the nice plasmas are great if you can afford them, the sh!tty plasmas are not so great.

DLP is cool. The thing I really like about them is that they're so light. My current 16:9 30" CRT (built in '97) weighs almost 200lbs. Current DLP sets weigh less than 100lbs, some under 60lbs.

Get a projector, best HDTV ever.... But only if you can control light to a degree in your room.

what's the difference between composite cables and component cables? is there a real difference between spec? is there reason you shouldn't use composite cable for the y/pb/pr hookup?

i haven't been able to find solid answer on this. tried the avsforum as well...

I went to tweeter and a big screen store today. The Mitsubishi looked great, so did the new Toshiba LCOS, although I found out that that set uses a bulb, and it costs twice as much as the Mitsubishi. My biggest concern is the new DVI interface that the local cable company is pushing. Supposedly, they are claiming all HDTV sets will need to be connected with a DVI interface by the end of 2004. None of the mitsubishi TV's offer a DVI input, they are all firewire. In fact, only two out of all the TV's I looked at had DVI inputs, and they also were the newest and most expensive.

I'm wondering if I should ignore this standard war between firewire and DVI and go ahead at get the Mitshubishi with firewire, or wait for a newer Tv with DVI inputs to come out. Also, I've seen some very bad looking firewire signals, from what looks like bad compression. It's my understanding that the DVI connection provides uincompressed video around 5GB/s to the tv, whereas the firewire can only get about 400MB/s compressed. Is there a difference in video quality then?
