HDTV question

I was at my uncle's tonight for Thanksgiving, he has a Toshiba HDTV, not sure of the size, maybe 52" or somewhere in that range. Anyway I was sitting maybe 8 feet from the TV, and we were watching the TB/Dallas game on Fox in 1080i. The colors were good, the picture was sharp and all, but overall I honestly was not seeing the same clarity that I see on our regular 27" CRT SDTV. Like still objects were nice, but anytime things were in motion, and especially wherever two different colors touched, like a moving football player's uniform against the grass, it just looked...blurry, is the best way to describe it. Blurry and grainy, at just that point on the screen, like you were watching a streaming internet video on a crappy LCD monitor or something like that.

What is the cause of this? Is it because it's 1080i and not 1080p? Or is it because of the technology of the screen? I'm not sure if it was plasma or LCD or something else.

it's because your uncle is impotent and doesn't upconvert to 1080p!

Actually I really have no idea, and upconverting to 1080p I've heard typically doesn't do much

Crappy feed or a crappy set... or maybe it's just you because HD content should just blow you away.

Maybe you're just trying to convince yourself that it wasn't good because you watch football on a puny 27" sd tube.

Even though I swear by HD, I can kind of vouch for what you're describing.

For example, Super Smash Bros. Melee, looks like sh!t on every single HDTV I've ever played it on. On the other hand, it looks beautiful on a 27" boob tube.

No no, I agree the picture was amazing for a TV of that size. If you compare the clarity of the pictures relative to the size of the TV, really no improvement, and actually a decline in clarity due to the issue I described. The picture was very sharp and life-like at times, but sometimes that graininess just turned me off.

I have a 55" widescreen with an analog SD signal in my dorm, so trust me I appreciate HD. Just still doesn't seem as refined as SD CRT, maybe due to the TV or the technology of the TV.

Wait, you're still going to GCC, right? They allow you to have a TV, let alone a TV of that size, in your room?

No I left GCC, I'm at Pitt main campus now. But GCC didn't have any TV restrictions anyway.

What format was the source. A TV capable of HD does not automagically make whatever you're watching HiDef. Maybe he doesn't have HD cable, just SD.

No idea on pixel size.

It was a 1080i signal. It looked great except for certain patches of graininess, especially where things were moving and colors touched. I know I'm not alone on this as I've read similar comments on this forum before.

the problem is some of the football games arent really that great in HD.. try PBS channels.. its really amazing in HD .. and a huge differnece from SD.

sports sometimes doesnt show really good in HD, and i have noticed the difference..
