particularly about gaming though. Would you run an xbox360 at 480p or 1080i? i run it at 1080i and my friend said that 480p is better, but i think he is crazy.

Your friend is a moron. 1080i FTW.

EDIT: Unless you mean 720p, which in that case it's a tossup. My HDTV is 1080i only though.

Why wouldn't you output it at 720p rather than 480p? What kind of TV are we talking about?

EDIT: Do you mean 720p, rather than 420? In that case, I would indeed go for 720p, which even MS recommends for quicker response time.

your friend is an idiot. You should never believe anything he says from here on out.

running an xbox360 at 480p is essentially killing everything that is good about it.

I'm completely confused. 420p? Then you say 480p in your post... so are we talking about 480p or 720p here? I am assuming the 420p is some sort of typo.

i think u ment 720p vs 1080i.

if that is the real case i always 720p my xbox360 and regular hd tv... also its because its the native resolution for my tv, :).

Are there framerate issues running games in HD resolutions over ED resolutions? That's the only conceivable reason I can think of for recommending 480p over 720p/1080i.

From 480p to 720p there is quite a lot of difference. There's still a difference from 720p to 1080i but quite subtle and probably most people can't see much difference.
