HDTV question

I get paid tomorrow, and about a week ago I caught a sale on an 27" Widescreen Panel HDTV with built in tuner for like $550 . I was looking the other day and it said the resolution was 1024x768. My question is being widescreen and in that resolution wouldn't the picture have that stretchy look?

yes, that's a standard tv and PC monitor ratio. If you can get it to do widescreen it will likely be at a pretty low resolution.

It is widescreen, the pixels just aren't square. So no it won't look stretched, you will be displaying 16:9 content at 16:9; the TVs internal scaler will handle resampling that to 1024x768.
