The set you picked out is awesome, but not new. It will be replaced by the end of the summer. It sounds like you worked out a good deal. The cable he was trying to sell you was probably a DVI or component cable. Worth the money if you want the picture. The warranty on those sets is a good idea. They are expensive when they break. You want to make sure that their warranty covers the lamp, and have it in writing that it does. For a DVD player for that set I would recommend the Samsung DVDHD931. It upconverts DVD's to HD quality and has a DVI output.

Please PM me if you have any questions. I dont like responding to threads like this because sooner or later some idiot will come in shouting "Get a Pioneer Elite plasma!!!" or "SONY WEGA, SONY WEGA!!!!!"

I just happen to sell TV's, and have been doing it for a long time.

I agree with all of this except for the DVD-HD931 part. It's personal preference though. My thought is if you plan to get a DVD player, don't get one with excessive edge enhancement and (this is the important part), the wrong DVI levels.

The DVD-HD931 uses PC DVI levels, with 0 being black and 255 being white. Standard video compatible levels are 16-235. This not only fails to pass blacker than black materials correctly and causes white crush, but also has color space errors in the conversion.

There are a few good DVD players with DVI or HDMI out that use proper video colorspace digital output. It just depends on your budget.

For all of you that are wondering, HDMI is basically DVI with sound all in one. It will be on pretty much every HDTV next model year.

There are a few out now, with many many more on the wings. Actually, one of which people have pretty high hopes for is the replacement for the DVD-HD931, the DVD-HD941. The DVD-HD841 though, unfortunately still has PC level DVI output.

Here are a couple of the HDMI ones:

Pioneer Elite DV59-AVi DVD HDMI player with DVD-A & SACD playback.

Arcam DV79 DVD player with DVD-A playback

There's HDMI players coming out from Sony (DVP-NS975V), Panasonic (DVD-S97), Toshiba (SD-V592), Philips (DVD-975SA & DVD-R90), Onkyo (SP-DV1000), Integra (DPS-10.5), Integra Research (RDV-1.1), and more.

Oh yeah, the recalled Toshiba SD-5960 you talked about too. 🙂
 
the warranty cost is most likely not set in stone...the salesperson may be willing to cut you some slack on it since he/she gets the most commission out of warranty sales. and getting everything down in writing + charging it to a good warranty-extending credit card (i.e. amex) would probably be good.
 
Ok here is my personal opinion.... the DLPs are very nice sets and a fanstastic choice. I think youd have to be insane to buy these things online however, especially since most places arent authorized retailers. I'm unsure about Samsung, but I know alot of companies like Pioneer and Sony refuse to warranty their TVs from a non-authorized retailer. And then toss in the fact if something is wrong when you get it, you dont have a store to go to and swap it out easily. Not to mention currently the NEW DLPs are more expensive online then through CC or such, like CC currently has the new HLP4663W for 2849 where as online best price is 3174 that I have seen. And I'd recomend the new DLPs over the old ones, like the new 63W series... it uses the newer HD3 chip, which has a higher contrast the the older 7W series (617W, 507W etc..) and it has a 7 color color wheel instead of 6 like the old one. The new 63 series also has both HDMI and DVI. As for the warranty.... I personally think it is worth it but I use my TV alot, I would probably go through 2 bulbs, you just need to make sure it covers the bulb (Only CC and Sears cover the bulb AFAIK, I know BB doesnt nor does Fry's, Ultimate Electronics, or Tweeter.

As for cables.... dont use cheap cables like radioshack or GE, Monster cables are very good, but yes they are overpriced, it is nice you know their good, but you can find good cables cheaper however online just need to make sure their not crap cables claiming their good. For people who say crap radioshack/GE etc.. cables are just as good as higher end cables and youd notice no difference.... I think their nuts, there is a deffinte difference.

Also if you dont have Digital/HD right now and you have comcast analog... you can get better deals by signing up in stores over just calling Comcast... if you switch from analog to digital/HD at CC you get $100 off your cable bill (basically 2 months free) or with BB you get a $50 MIR... I went with the $100 at CC.

He's full of shlt. I have a 50" Sammy DLP and use the cables that came with my box from Time Warner....the picture is better than the set I saw in the store. You don't need any damn "signal enhancer", either.
Just buy the TV and take it home. It's freaking awesome.
 
What store was this salesman from? If it was Best Buy or Circuit City, he's not on commission.

That said, don't get the cables(assuming comcast gives you component of course), but definitely get the service plan.

One cable I would get is upgrading to DVI if your HD box has it... (Comcast boxes do), DVI does make a difference, it's not like black+white to color, but it is deff noticable.

Right, and if it was up to me I wouldn't buy any insurance except health insurance because in the case of health insurance the risk and cost is just too high not to have it.

However, for home insurance I'll take the chance that my house will light on fire or a tornado might hit it. If I didn't have to buy car insurance I'd rather bank on no accident.

The only thing you need to get it going is the TV. Forget all that other crap.

I have the 61" DLP and the only thing I bought at Circuit City was the TV despite all the harassment on trying to get me to buy the extra warranty, hdtv receiver, antenna, rca cables, etc etc.

I ordered the DVI cable online along with the Samsung progressive scan DVD to save a few bucks. Ironic, considering I paid around $5k for the TV last year. 🙂

Actually, none of the HD3 chips are currently scheduled to have a 7-segment colorwheel. Only the xHD3 and HD2+ are scheduled to.

The HD3 chip is a cost saving measure over the HD2. It has 1/2 of the number of mirrors (640 x 720 in a diamond formation instead of 1280 x 720 in a standard formation), and is smaller. The fill ratio is not as good either. So, yes, it does have a higher contrast ratio, but other aspects of the picture quality are probably not quite as high.
 
Hmmmm, we got the DVI cable with the TV, so I see no need to buy another. Best Buy tried to get me to buy the 12 foot monster cable component cable for like 120 dollars. I laughed at them and went to my local electronics store (not Radio Shack...a local one) and bought a decent cable for 20 bucks. We bought the TV at Circuit City after price matching Best Buy's 10% off coupon and taking advantage of the 300 dollar gift card offer at CC. After all was said and done the effective price was 2700 dollars. I think the TV came with a component cable also but was too short for the run I needed.

So far we have been very pleased with the 50 inch Samsung DLP once we got used to the various screen modes and stuff. HDTV on it is awesome. Good luck on your purchase.
 
Man you guys are fvcking rich, spending $3-$5k on a tv.🙂 I thought I spent alot when I bought my Samsung EDTV 32 DynaFlat TV and progressive scan dvd player with a nice black wooden stand with a 3 year extended warranty for the low price of $1100. Too bad I still have $285 left to pay (bought with circuit city 16month no interest financing).

Man I shoulda spent $200 more and gotten the HDTV set.🙂 (My EDTV set is still purdy with anamorphic dvd's though🙂)


You should definitely buy your TV online for tvauthority.com, the local shop tried to rip you off, they DON'T DESERVE A PENNY!

After july 1st, 2004 all TVs 36"+ will have to have a built in (over the air) hdtv tuner, unless the tv is labeled as a "monitor." This is a new FCC regulation. You will notive that if you go to BestBuy, they will have all the "old" 36"+ TVs labled as "monitors" because they don't have HDTV tuners built in. There is a slight advantage to this, stores and manufacturers are having pretty good clearences on the non-compliant TVs to make way for the newer built in sets. Best buy only has a few sets that have built in tuners last I walked through.

Me myself i'd wait for the sammy HLPxx74W (HD2+) models to come out, or the seven segment HLPxx63W (HD3).

plasma = thin with wide viewing angle. pixels are physical like lcd, so content at different res is interpolated to fit. plasma is expensive. looking closely you can see the pixel elements stick out. color reproduction/contrast isn't as good as tube. resolution of cheaper plasma is generally far below real hdtv which would be 1280x720 for 720p and 1920x1080 for 1080i/p.
