Ok, my 42" Panasonic plasma will be waiting for me tonight. It has a QAM tuner for receiveing the HDTV networks braodcast in the clear. My question is how do I go about tuning in said channels?

I am assuming I will need to do so outside of my Tivo?

Plug the cable into the TV.

The TV menu will have a "scan channels" option, do that.

It will take about 10 minutes and automatically setup all the channels you can receive in the clear.

All you have to do is connect the coax cable from your cable line to the QAM tuner and scan for channels. Just be warned, the scan can take a while to finish.

I'm expecting my Panny 42" to arrive around tomorrow, I'm excited. Hopefully it will be whole and functional.

No, a few digital channels including local HDTV stations are generally carried by the cable companies unencrypted, and the QAM tuner picks them up.

Also, sometimes it is good to re-scan all your channels after a couple weeks. When I first scanned them, the local HD channels would be on channels like 79-2, 116-1, 116-2, etc., when the non-HD channels would be on 2 and 4, 5, 7, etc. I re-scanned a couple days ago and now it is like 2, 2-1(HD), 4, 4-1(HD), etc. so it makes it alot easier to change channels now.

Greetings and congradulations on the purchase of your new Panasonic plasma television! It is a fine device and I am sure you will be pleased with its performance. A few tips from a fello 42" owner:

If you find your TV "forgetting" its channel settings, it probably needs a firmware update. This can be completed with an SD card and some service menu trickery. I had to do mine and haven't had a problem since.

Make sure to turn down the picture settings, fresh out of the box they're set far too high for optimal performance and viewing pleasure.

While perhaps not required, I do recommend a 100 hour break in period, just to be safe, you know? After that, try these settings:

picture 22
brightness 8
color -1
tint -4
sharpness -14
color warm
black level- light

I guess those are the results of some ISF calibration, and look good.
