When I purchased my Leadtek PCIe 6600GT it came with an nVidia breakout connector. One end plugs into the S-video out on the graphics card, and the other end has the 3 high def connectors plus s-video and normal video for a total of 5 connections. If I output through this pigtail into my high def component connectors on my Samsung LCD TV will I get true high definition?

If I can do this do I need to change/adjust something in the nVidia control panel? The main reason is when playing DVDs using my laptop (6800 Go Ultra) to view on the wide screen LCD TV. Both my vid cards have the fully functioning PureVideo controller. Will I need to download and install the decoder to get high def?

I'm really a new nob when it comes to high definition stuff, but I'm reading all I can to get up to speed.

Any responses are appreciated!

Yes and no.

Yes in that the S video connector is actually a sort of DIN type of connection which accepts S video cable and the adaptor cable Leadtek provided. The adaptor allows you to connect the PC to TV via component input. A better solution would be to employ the DVI out or HDMI if you have these connections on both the VGA and TV.

No in that your DVDs (I assume that this is the gest of the quierie) are not hi def. Some DVD have been upscaled for an enhanced appearance. Normal DVDs can be enhanced by using a post-processing app like FFDShow. True hi def DVD will appear when BlueRay and HD DVD show up this year.

Best bet is to run your resolution at your LCD's native rsolution (makes for a killer big screen PC monitor). nVidia's newer drivers have great features which allow you to easily adjust for over/under scan, which may be an issue.

Thanks geezer for your input.

I do have DVI on my laptop, but the Samsung has only HDMI. I know I can buy an adapter, but for some reason the Samsung will NOT take a PC input through the HDMI via an adapter. So that's out. I can use the vga connection and run in the panel's native res. Just to see I pipe'd a DVD through the s-video and cloned my display (per Dell's manual) but the video was kinda crappy.

OTOH watching a DVD on the samsung through my xbox using widescreen format was simply stunning!!! I've not seen that kind of video quality before. And that's just using the composite audio and s-video from the xbox. Think I'll track down a high-def adapter cable for my xbox (original) to see. I really want to see what all the hoopla is over hi def.

Thanks again!

No reason to do that, Media Player Classic with ffdshow and component out from your 6600 will almost certianly give better results unless you spend big bucks on the standalone player. If you want to see real HD, check out some WMV-HD, DivxHD or Quicktime HD clips, or get a HD cable box or tuner card.
