HDTV for Wii and 360

I keep hearing that the Wii looks bad on HDTV's

Is this true?

Also what's a rather cheap LCD TV that can play the Wii and look good? I'm talking about 24 - 32 inches.

The Wii looked fine on my 42" LCD when I had it. When I upgraded to component cables for 480p output, it looked even better. It's still a far cry from the HD graphics of other consoles, but it doesn't look horrible by any means.
 
I wouldn't say the Wii looks especially bad on an HDTV, especially on a 32" screen. You're sure to notice a difference between it and a 360 though. Just make sure to get the component cables, otherwise you're looking at 480i, which definitely will look ugly.
 
It doesnt look bad, some of the early games looked a little jaggy with the component cables, but the new ones are much better.

Its not 360 or ps3 level, but assuming youre playing the right games, you be having too much fun to care.
 
blah I want a hi-def nintendo machine with a regular controller, not some stupid gimmick. Oh and more than a couple good games would help.
 
Looks great on mine, although I've got it hooked up via VGA. It really all depends on the quality of your scaler.

May I ask how you did this? I looked for a VGA cable option but to my surprise, I didn't find anything.

My 1080p treats the VGA input different than the component input. It will blur and add a zillion artifacts to the component signal, not to mention a ton of overscan when it scales it. When it scales the VGA output, it tries its best to maintain the appearance of pixels rather than blurrifying everything.

I can only speak for my TV. Theres no reason why your TV can't scale component well, but in general, most TVs treat the comp. inputs as video that shouldnt have sharp edges and the VGA as graphics, which should. To my eyes, the VGA scaling looks MUCH better.

It doesnt make it high res, in fact, it looks pretty pixelated. But these are very, very sharp pixels.

So the site that StS linked says the maximum output resolution is 640x480, so does that mean that with the VGA hookup I could no longer game in widescreen at 720x480, also considered 480p, as I do with my component cables?

Or is that website a damn, dirty liar?

EDIT: I just noticed that some of the images provided appear to be on a widescreen monitor, but I can't tell if the images are stretched or not.

When the wii (or anything else) puts out 16:9 480p, it doesnt raise the resolution, it just changes the picture so that when you do stretch the picture on your widescreen tv, it looks like a proper widescreen image.

720x480 isnt a widescreen resolution. Its standard NTSC/SDTV resolution, non-square pixels. Do the math, its not 16:9, its 3:2. Widescreen 16:9 480p would technically be 848x480, but theres no source that actually puts that out there.

AFAIK, the Wii internally renders in 640x480, and its converted to standard 720x480 on output whether its in 16:9 mode or not, so the transcoder appears to be interpreting it properly and recreating a proper 640x480 image with square pixels.

As long as your TV can stretch the VGA input (I cant imagine one that can't), you can game on in widescreen (I sure as hell do).

OTOH, you can't play the few 480i only games anymore. 🙁
 
Oh and I'm not using that actual cable, I'm using an X2VGA transcoder. I cant speak for the quality of the vdigi cable, but it cant be that hard to do it well.

Thats what I'm trying to say. Theres *no such thing* as true widescreen 480p. Its as "true" as it was over component.

Progressive scan dvd players, the ps2, ps3, wii, xbox, 360, and anything else in the world that outputs in "widescreen 480p" natively outputs a 4:3 image that is then stretched.

Essentially, everything is squished vertically, so that when its stretched out, it looks normal, but its not a "true" 16x9 image.

720p and 1080p are a different story. 1280:720 = 16:9.
