go through device manager to find if DMA is enabled. Most likely it is not..
it should be in hard drive properties IIRC. I only use win2k nowdays with which you have to go through properties of the controller.

right click my computer, and hit up properties

go to your devices and find your hard drive, then check the DMA box

that's got to be the problem behind the high cpu utilization, make sure you do the same with your cd-rom drives.

ok, its not checked, but when i try and check it, it asks to restart. I do, it comes up, and the check does not "stick". That is, its still unchecked. Ive repeated this three times. Any ideas why i cant force it into DMA?

Since your motherboard has a Via chipset, you can only enable the DMA through the drivers from Via.

I recommend you grab the 4 in 1 drivers from Via or IWill and install them. During the install you will get an option to enable DMA mode.

If you've already installed these drivers then you need to reinstall them again and make sure you check the DMA box when the install asks you.
