i got a question. what is this useful for? and how do you get sound out of it from dvi? sorry for the stupid question

This is just to convert the video. You will not be able to get sound from it.
This is useful when you have a new dvd player (or device) that has HDMI and you have an slightly older TV that only has DVI, or vice versa. Can be very useful actually.

Can anyone comment on the shielding on these cables? I got bad interference on the last set I bought from Pacific Cable..

Seems fine - have this cable running next to the power cable from DVD down through bookcase and no indication of interference. Connects (new) HDMI DVD player to (older) LCD TV with DMI.

Note: some older LCD TV's DVI ports are not HDCP enabled and thus cannot accept signals from newer HDMI DVD players - this is not the cable's fault!
