HDMI cables

I was talking to some people at work the other day and they mentioned that the Xbox 360 HDMI cable only allows 720p.

They said some cables are like that, only allowing 720p instead of 1080p. I thought all HDMI cables would allow 1080p? whats the scoop?

If true, how do you know if your cable is only doing 720p or not? If my TV says 1080p does that mean it's doing 1080p or could the HDMI cable be hindering it's true performance?

No, they don't know what they're talking about

Even the HDMI 1.0 spec supported 1080p, so any HDMI cable can pass a 1080p signal.

What they may be getting confused about is that not all XBOX 360 games are actually rendered in 1080p (some aren't even 720p if I recall correctly), they're just upscaled to that resolution.

So, no, Xbox (and any HDMI cable connected to them) can do 1080p. The games themselves, however, may not be though. But that has nothing to do with HDMI

If you have a poor quality cable and a long run, you might introduce errors. Luckily, digital errors are fairly obvious. So if you're not seeing anything (and unless you've got a really long cable run, your chances of having errors are slim) then you're good to go.

The minimum requirement for games has been 720p. It was the ONLY console to REQUIRE that all games be in high def (except for a few exceptions) - so it's gonna be hard for the PS3 fanboys to win that fight.

In order to play a 1080p game in 1080p, you need both the HDMI cord and a TV capable of handling 1080p inputs - not all HDTVs do this. Mine caps at 1080i - for instance - and just de-interlaces it to 1080p.

Now though, I believe MS recently lifted the 720p requirement. Or so it has been reported...

I'm not sure what you're even trying to say, but both consoles are good for HD gaming. PC is better, but well...not everyone is a PC gamer.
