HDMI Audio Issue

My new HTPC is connected via HDMI to my TV.

Sound is fine, until I change source, say to digital TV. When I select HDMI again there is no audio.

I assumed it was a TV issue, however if I restart the computer or just put it into standby and awaken it immediately sound is restored.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

it would help to know how you are outputting the HDMI signal. if it is from your motherboard's on-board graphics, there are only a few sound processor chips that currently support 5.1 over HDMI. i am not an expert so perhaps someone else can comment, but my guess is that's your problem. at a minimum, i would check the website of your hardware to see if they support what you need.
