Since this discussion has veered a bit, I'll ask here instead of a new thread:

Is it possible to use devices routed through a receiver via HDMI while it's off? In my case, I have a 360 to an hdmi input on my Onkyo rc260, then the avr's hdmi out to the tv. I have the video processing on the receiver set to passthrough, but when turned off my tv goes to standby.

I ask because I'd like to use only the tv speakers at night and don't want to go into the receiver's settings every time and switch it over. For some reason I can't use the tv and HT speakers at the same time or it wouldn't be a problem.

Passthrough can be flaky with some receivers. I would head over to avsforums and find the master thread for your receiver and poke around in there for an answer.

I have a Yamaha RX-V867 and it will do exactly what you are describing. In fact, I can even switch HDMI inputs when the AVR is off by pushing the input I want on the remote control.

The bottom line though is that it is dependant on your AVR. I believe most newer ones have this feature.

Sounds like an HDMI control issue (or CEC). If you disable HDMI control, the sound shouldn't cut out on you when you turn your TV off.

...a few weeks later, and....Bummer, I was able to turn this off on my Panasonic plasma and my receiver, but I still get the cut out blues. Any other ideas?
