Does anyone happen to know if H97 motherboards such as this one support HDMI 2.0? I'm thinking of upgrading my ancient HTPC and would like it to be future-proof for when I get a 4k projector eventually.

According to the manual for that motherboard it says "Supports HDMI with max. resolution up to 1920x1200 @60Hz". None of the graphics ports are higher than that according to the manual, which is odd.

I think HDMI 2 was just finalized recently, so you'll probably have to wait.

I don't see any reason why you would believe that mobo supports HDMI 2.0
Doesn't say it anywhere in its spec sheet.

Currently only GTX970/GTX980 support HDMI 2.0

It isn't like you'd be doing 4K gaming on an ITX platform with the onboard chipset. For movie watching in a HTPC, that is ideal.

Well, if he is buying now to future proof for 4K, might as go for the real 4K. I'm not even sure the media front end he will use will look good scrolling, animating, etc, at 24Hz.

Some motherboards claim to be 4k ready, but most 4k devices are not fully 4k. My Gigabyte motherboard Z87N-WIFI motherboard said it was 4k ready on the box. Go download the manual and read it. Heaven forbid you actually read the manual or go to the support website and do your own research. I have not seen any motherboards with HDMI 2.0, but I have not been looking for it.

According to this website HDMI 1.4 is capable of 4K whether Intel has a processor capable of 4K is another story. Maybe generation 5 i3's will be able to do that.

HDMI 1.4 does support 4K, as well as many existing motherboards/laptops/GPU's.. however people are just stuck on HDMI 2.0 because it adds 60Hz support, whereas HDMI 1.4 is only 30Hz I believe. For movie watching, HDMI 1.4 @ 4K is perfectly fine. For gaming, you'd want 60Hz support, but also be ready to shell out $1000+ for GPU's that will handle modern games at 4K resolution with playable performance.

So I take it there are no motherboards out yet which do support HDMI 2.0, so far only the high end video cards do. My other option would be getting a mobo with displayport, which I believe does support 4k @ 60 hz. However there is no garauntee that a projector I get in the future would have displayport out. So unless it is possible to convert a hypothetical HDMI 2.0 output from a future device to displayport in on the motherboard, I'll wait I think unless my current rig takes a dump. It's an E6600 with an 8600 GT video card but still works fine for blu-rays and netflix.

Note I said for movie watching, not for all sorts of eyecandy filled GUI's.
