Ok, hoping someone has dealt with this before...
Dinosaur win98se, Asrock K7S8x, 512 ram, Audigy 2, Nvidia 5100 pro

some time ago, my drivers got wiped, after reinstalling all my drivers, My slave drive (maxtor 40 gig) would only show up on boot up, and in the bios as a 33gb, but not in windows.

I have reset the CMOS, new bios, reinstalled the IDE drivers, and for teh life of me cannot figure out why the slave drive will not show up.
the master, on the same IDE channel shows up as a generic type 47 as well, but works fine.
It's set to DMA, been formatted, re-formatted, etc etc...

i've moved the drives to teh secondary IDE only to get a generic type 80 IDE drive in windows, even though they all show up perky and happy in boot and bios.

I dunno what else to do, and I desperately need the data off it.

Any experiences and/or ideas would be much appreciated

What happens when you put the Master on the first IDE channel, and the problem drive on its own IDE cable on the second IDE channel? If it's showing in Device Manager, can you assign it a drive letter there using the little dropdown box?

If that doesn't work, you might try rebooting into DOS mode and see if you can pull it up using drive letters D:, E:, F:, etc until you find it. If so... remember your DOS xcopy commands? 😀

Good luck. If you have any pals with other systems you could use, then you might want to heave it into their system as a slave and try to pull your data, then burn it to CD, or email it to yourself if it's small enough. May I suggest WinXP Pro or Win2000Pro sometime soon 😀
