HDD Toast?

Yesterday I got an Windows error saying my HDD was having errors and that I should perform a backup. So I started trying to transfer things (About 1.5 tb of media and programs) to my external drive. After a while nothing was transferring and that error had popped up several more times. At this point I just shut down my PC and went to bed. This morning the drive wasn't recognized from 'My Computer'.

I'm assuming this means the drive is a goner? Is there any way to retrieve the data from it at this point?

Not that worried about it enough to spend much money on it. Now it shows up sometimes, I can get a couple files off before the transfer rate goes to 0 kbps and freezes up there. Guess I'll just scrap it.

http://www.onepcbsolution.com and similar companies may be able to help if the problem is entirely electronic. They sell replacement circuit boards and swap firmware chips so the new board will be matched to the original drive's servo and heads.
