HDD Temp sensor location question

Pretty much as the title says, I have a separate sensor/thermistor on the MB that I want to locate on the HDD. What I am wondering is what would be the best possible location for this sensor? I was going to just stick it on top of the drive but figured there might be a more "informative" location that some knowledgable AT users could point me too. If it matters, it is a Maxtor (DiamondMax 30 GB HDD). I would appreciate any and all hints for this.

The manufacturers list the min-max operational and storage(non-operational) temps for their drives. You can find out your drives exact tolerances by looking at spec sheets like the one for the D740X

I have 7 Western Digital 80GB special editions. I've looked on their web site at all the data sheets and specs I can find, and they don't list temps anywhere. Anyone know where I can find this info?

while were on this subject..i know that the util progs for one of the drives i think its WD but dont call me on that , lists drive temperature when ure doing diagnostics...any way to read that outside of that util? anyone heard of this? it should be part of the SMART test i assume..

I have the WD S.E. 80gb myself and no offense but i found the info in less than 2 minutes It's right here under enviromental specifications.

Buzz2b - Why not just utilize the built-in S.M.A.R.T. temp sensor? The latest MBM as well as at least 2 stand-alone programs support these sensors. I use Dtemp to monitor the temps on all my HDDs.

Actually, I am just using the added extra sensor/thermistor cable that came with the Soltek Purple Ray MB. I'm building/have built a system for a teenager, complete with side plexi window, interior lighting kit and UV sensative (glowing) rounded cables and fans. The HDD is located in the bottom of the case, in plain sight. I thought this would make for a nice "eye candy" type thing. I do have the latest version of MBM5 installed and it reads the sensor nicely. The only other location I've considered is on the video card or possibly the RAM. I just thought the HDD, since it was in plain view, would be better.
