Hi All,

I hold a laptop, which I usualy keep running during night which P2P application .

I have set the HDD Switch Off for 10 min. I am looking for your opnion is this is a good idea to keep the HDD in this mode as the buffer contents by the application written to HDD with more then 10 min interval.

I am asking form the HDD life and performance point of view.

Thanx

Set it to spin down at 1hr when plugged in. If you're running a P2P app overnight, the thing should never have that much idle time to spin down - even 10 minutes. If it does, you're not getting fast enough download speeds. ;)

From HDD lifetime point of view, it is best to turn it on and never turn it off. That's how it will have maximum lifetime.
Since it is a lap-top and it is plugged in, why setting it to turn off anyways?

Yes its True I dont have a good internet connection for download speed fast enough to keep with HDD timeout. As per my thinking to put the HDD switch off after some time may increase its life time and power saving. Please correct if I am wrong after looking at AstroGuardian comments on this.

This has been discussed many eons ago. There's just not a concrete evidence that turning a hdd off in between system use will extend it's life expectancy, nor keeping it on will do the same. The only concrete evidence is that when it is off, it's not in use and does not consume power and that if it stays on all the time, it will use more power. So when is it gonna bit the dust? No one knows. Both the turning on and off hdd's causes electrical and mechanical stress to the hdd same way when it is always on!
