I want to buy a new hard drive for my desktop and I've found it incredibly hard to find any relevant data on the subject (excluding ssds). I'm either very incompetent or there are simply no good places to find the answers I seek.

Basically I just want to see some modern hdd charts that compare them. From what little I could find, it appears that samsung f3 1tb sahd103sj is the hard to get, but I would like to be sure.

Also, I would like to know how it compares to my current hdd wd 6400aaks, as I could get 2 more of these for almost same price as that one f3- I was considering of running them in raid 0. [edit not raid 1 but 0- my bad]

Anywho, any modern hdd charts would be most helpful. Thank you.

I guess there isn't enough excitement or development in the HDD area these days to garner reviews/charts. You could try Storage Review. They have a comparison database and it looks as if they recently started doing reviews again, including HDDs.

Thank you Zap, I thought I might be getting feeble.

I did find that site, but it doesnt show neither 6400aaks nor the f3 from samsung. I'm not sure what models does it display, but I couldnt find any hard drives that I recognized or wanted to see compared. Judging from the capacity of the models reviewed there, I'd say its a 5 year old chart- or so.

The real world difference in 7200rpm HD's isn't going to be dramatic no matter which one you choose.
A Samsung F3, WD Black or Seagate Barracuda are all going to give you fairly similar performance.
Different people favor one brand over another. I like WD Black's, so those are the drives I buy.

This! When in doubt go for the best specs, warranty and price. Combine them to equal best value.

Drop down a level into WD Blue drives and the difference is noticeable.

The difference between a Samsung F3 and WD Black isn't all that great in terms of performance. I find the Blacks to be unusable due to the awful racket they make though. F3 is nearly silent relative to the Black. Seagate Barracuda also quiet, WD Blue somewhat quiet but also somewhat slow.

Thank you for your replies!

It appears that f3 really is the way to- its cheaper than wd black and faster in most benchmarks too.

I wasnt crazy about raid 0 idea, with one hdd failing they both do, so I'm kinda glad that I'll be going for a simple single drive.

Thanks for clearing it up for me!

:sneaky: Speaking of drive failure...
Remember the F3 only has a three year warranty vs a five year warranty on the WD Black. That's a substantial percentage increase.

Also, the WD drives will get regularly kicked off an array due to TLER, unless you spring for the much more expensive RE WD drives. Consumer grade WD drives are not suitable for RAID.

Why is it that in the IOMETER charts, the 7200.12 gets a pounding, not just by the blacks but even by the older 7200.11? (link)
