Alright, I'll start this out by saying that this isn't my problem, but a friends, so I don't have all 100% his system specs, but I think I know all the important stuff.
I've got a buddy who built a system with a KR7a RAID and two 60gb Maxtor ata133 drives which were in removable racks. He was running winXP, and all was well except every so often (we're talking once every 2 weeks of being on 24-7) the hdd would might a slight click and then the access light would stay on, and this would freeze the computer.
Well, last week the drives crashed and he didn't really think anything of it until he tried to format them from a startup disk and they wouldn't finish formatting. After several attempts he finally got one to format without freezing, but it wouldn't stay active long enough to install windows.
He's tried connecting the drives to all 4 of the ide channels, with and without the removable racks, and the same thing still happens, even with all cards removed except a Leadtek gf2 agp.
He's tried the hdd in other computers, and they format fine. he's tried a WD brand hdd and that will not format either. The only thing I could think of was maybe he has junk ram, but he has 4 256mb crucial sticks in, which should be good stuff.
Oh, and finally, he doesn't overclock anything at all, and we even tried this on the failsafe bios settings to no luck. any ideas?
