HDD Problem...

I have a problem with my IBM 30GB ata/100 drive. I noticed it first this morning...the first time it happened, I was trying to burn a CD from files on that hard drive. At 4% of burning (I tried with CDRWin and FireBurner) the hard drive made a noise as if it were seeking, but very short and it did it for about a minute. And then the CD stopped burning...buffer underrun.

So I rebooted and upon bootup Win2k wanted to "verify" disk F:. Fine. Then at around 63%, it did the same thing. However, other than that the drive works just fine. Does anyone have any suggestions? I need to get this fixed preferably with a software program, but I think it's still under warantee.

Thanks. 🙁

Sounds like you got yo'self some bad sectors. 🙁

As far as I know there really aren't any programs that can save that.

I'm sure IBM has a program to test the drive's integrity and give it the full over. Look at their web site.

If it is bad sectors probably the best thing to do would be RMAing it because even if you low level format and it appears okay, it'll come back. At least that's what I was told when I asked about a friend's computer that had bad sectors awhile back.

Those famous IBM 75GXP drives sure are big troublemakers!
They are fast and silent while reading and writing data but lots of them make annoying buzzing noises in the background or even have (other) defects.

I myself bought a 45G version a while ago (about 2,5 months ago) but had to return it to the store because of the noises it made ...it just wasnt any good. I also bought a 30 Gig version (DTLA 307030) about half a year ago and now it seems to start making slight buzzing noises too!

The quality and integrity of those things just doesnt seem to be all too high!

Wouldn't you think it may be stuck on a bad sector that it can't read? 🙂

Otherwise, it's probably a mechanical problem and it would need replacement.

Though, I haven't been thinking so well today- so I could be completely wrong. :disgust:
