HDD Partition Question

Just installed a brand new 80GB HDD and use the automatic partition option. I partitioned into two sections, with one being 60GB and one 20GB. Did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro and everything went well. Now here's the dumb question: I can clearly see my C: drive (showing 60GB) when I click on "My Computer" but I cannot seem to locate the other 20GB. I was thinking it would just show up under "My Computer" as a totally separate drive but no other HD space is listed but obviously, there's another 20GB in there somewhere. How in the world do I gain access to this partition or "see" it??

If you are logged in as Administrator ...

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrator Tools>Computer Management

Look for Disk Management. It may have made the partition (Extended), but it probably didn't format it or create a Logical drive.

Yeah, I definitely partitioned it. Asked me what size I wanted to partition to and I chose 60GB of the 80GB. It then partitioned and formatted the C: drive. To be honest though, I don't recall an option coming up to format the 20GB partition. But I can't seem to "find" the additional 20GB.

I tried Sasha's steps above but while being logged in as an Admin, I can't seem to find an option for "Admin Tools" or "Computer Management".

I'm lost...

Edited to note that once I changed to "Classic View" I saw the "Computer Management" option. That's odd. Gonna see if I can figure out the missing 20GB problem through that.

Okay...

I can now "see" the secondary 20GB partition but it's saying it is "Unallocated" and I'm not really sure how to proceed.

Any help would be appreciated.

you need to um... drag the bar i believe and then specify it as D:

I figured it out. I had to right click on the "Unallocated" drive to partition it. It's the point after that where I got lost for a moment. Didn't realize I had to right click again on it after it became "Free Space" and then actually format the drive and assign it a letter.

Thank you Sasha for pinpointing where I needed to go and thanks to the others for the additional help. This is why I love anandtech. 🙂
