HDD Noise

I have two IBM HDDs in my (supposedly) quiet PC. Having just rebuilt this PC due to the previous motherboard failing I put the case back together and noticed a resonating noise coming from the case. I.e. I though there was an twin-prop aeroplane flying nearby.

I have two IBM 7200rpm HDDs in drive bays next to each other which I put my hand on either are vibrating quite vigoursly!

I have no option to move the drives as there are only two bays.

What would be the best options to dampen the resonance?

Well first thing that I would do is to make sure that each drive has 4 screws securely holding the drive in the cage, if you still hear noise, you can buy some rubber screws maybe that will help.

Do you mean you have only 2 3.5" bays? If you have spare 5.25" bays you could try this for example. There are many alternatives though.

Well I have three 3.5" bays - 1 Floppy + 2 HDDs. Having discussed the matter with somebody at work today we came up with the same solution as you suggest - I will see what is available in the UK to meet that ends.

Many thanks

lol does that really work?

I noticed the onlyreason to shake a HD was when they had something called stiction. Wiki for stiction
But nowdays that seems kinda useless as HD companies have fixed this problem.
