i have a hdd that died on me, no longer spins most likely due to a bad motor. the data on the drive is siginificant to me though, and people keep telling me that i was dumb for not keeping backups (of 85 gigs of media...)

in any case, are there any small-time solutions that dont cost 2g's which are applicable to specifically to that kind of problem?

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If the drive no longer spins, I think you are out of luck unless you are going to spend the big $$$$

Well, if the motor itself is shot, I doubt you can do much; the factory might be able to repair it, but beyond that you'd have to go to a data recovery firm that can disassemble the disk and pull the data off the platters (read: very expensive).

However, it's more likely that something is damaged on the PCB that controls the motor. If you can find an identical hard drive and switch the boards out, you might be able to fix yours. This is a long shot, but it does work if that's the problem.

And, yes, you should keep backups of your data. :)

hm, and i thought my friend was pulling my leg when he said that the boards could be switched out. 'tis a maxtor 160gb 8mb buffer.

-_- i spent five years getting this stuff. five years of my life. and one crash later, it's all gone. im gonna hurt something. :(

are there any ways to find out whether or not its the board that's broken or the motor itself?

data savers start here and do a google for more. but i bet a new 160 gig maxtor will be ALOT less $$$. also , i belive that if you don't use a company aproved by the drive manufacturer you void your warrenty.
good luck
