Hi

guys I just got a 76gb IBM hdd and its making quite alot of noise durring format, not all the time, just now and then
could it be that it has bad blocks ? because I know this is not quite normal for hdds

will run IBM fitness test in a second, but I thought Id ask your advice first
also any other good hdd checking software out there ?

please let me know

Thank you
Dan

UPDATE: not to mention its taking forever to format, formatting second partiton (50GB) well its been an hour Id say, thats way too long isnt it ?

UPDATE2: before installing win I did a couple DOS formats to make sure the drive was ok and funny thing is it didnt take this long or make any noises, hmmmmm

The fitness test is what I'd use first.

If the sound seems to be a grinding sound, I'd say you should RMA it if it's still under warranty. Hope you don't get a 75gxp back though!

Ask for your money back whoever you bought it from sold you a bum drive. They had to know something was wrong with it.

Back then they had 3 year warranties so you probably still have a little left. Sometimes you can find out on the website if your particular drive is still in warranty. Go to www.hgst.com and follow the Support links to find out.
