HDD LED Problems with MSI BXMaster

I'm having a very annoying problem with my HDD LED, b/c I cannot get it to light at all. I know this is not a mission critical problem and my computer works without it, but for all those anal perfectionists out there like me...you understand the annoyance factor. I tested the bulb and cable out to make sure that it wasn't something stupid like the bulb. My friend has the exact same board and it works just fine, so I made sure mine is connected the exact same way, so the + and - pins are correct. For those of you familiar with the BXMaster, you know it has the Promise chip built in for onboard ATA66support. I have two drives connected to these ATA66 ports, each drive set up as Master on the separate ports. My aforementioned friend has only one drive set up on one of the ATA66 ports and his HDD LED works fine connected to the standard pins. To further complicate matters, the BXMaster has additional pins for an LED to monitor the additional ATA66 ports built in. My friend's worked without having to use these pins, but I tried them as well with no success. I am really at a loss here, as I have expended all my ideas at diagnosing this problem. I would appreciate any help, and thank you to anyone who tries to tackle this problem with me.

I am having the exact same problem right now Maximus1, although I am still trying to get the PC I just built up and running, so I have other things to worry about first. The LED wire plugs into the middle 2 pins, right? I have tried it facing both ways and can't get it to work.

Yeah, it plugs into the middle two wires. I have everything else up and running, just this last nagging problem. I just built a system for a friend with the exact same board and we plugged the wire into the standard HDD LED connector (by the speaker, reset switch, power LED, and power switch connectors) and his worked fine. Of course, that would be too easy for mine to work the same way....:(

I know this is kind of off the topic, but what BIOS version are you using Maximus1? I am having problems and I was wondering if flashing the BIOS (I have version 5) would help anything.

did you try plugging the led into the bottom two connectors? (bottom two relative to the case standing up.) that's where i have mine plugged in.

The ata 66 has the LED connector in a different location than where the standard power switch connectors and ata33 led is. It is up closer to the ATA 66 ports on the board. Read the manual and see the board diagram.

I've tried both the standard (bottom) connectors and the ATA66 connectors up near the top of the board as well. I have tried the plug both ways on each set of pins and nothing seems to work. All other pins or LED connectors seem to work except for my HDD LED. Thanks for all the advice so far, I really hope I can finally get to the bottom of this one. :)

Kjazlaw and Maximus1: what Ultra66 driver version are you using? Every time I try to install the one off of the CD the driver shows up as a SCSI device in Device Manager but it has the yellow dot and ! on it. If I go into its properties it says "This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all of the drivers installed"

Have you tried the HDD LED connected to the Power LED pins to make sure that your HDD LED is not burnt out ??. BTW, when connecting any LED bundles I always look at them to find the common color (usually white), this wiil connect to the negative side.

The connector might just be dead Max. I have the same problem with an ABIT KA7, no matter what I did, I couldn't get the thing to light up. The LED is fine, since I hooked it up to my SCSI card now and it lights properly.

Yeah Pariah.....I think you are right. I've tested the LED and it works on another board, so I think the header pins are just dead, like you said. Well, nothing worth losing any sleep over :(

yes, it does. windows thinks it's a scsi controller (and the devices attached are scsi devices) but it seems to detect everything ok.
