Hello All?.

I need your views on this?. Is there any one program to use that will let you boot from a floppy with CDROM support, partition and format a large drive and install the operating system? Over the years I have accumulated various programs like Partition Magic 4.0; Norton Ghost; various utilities bought from auctions and what it boils down to is I get tired of looking for all these utilities when I wonder if one package will do the whole job. The reason for these questions is, the other night I bought a Maxtor 15 Gig drive, installed it and tried to install Win 98 SE. The setup disk that comes with the drive asked for a boot disk and did a lousy job of setting up the partition and formatting. Bottom line I finally installed the OS and did not get the full potential of the 15 Gigs.

What do your folks do or use?

Thanks
Dave

I had to use a win 98 boot disk when the maxtor setup disk asked for one, so now I had to use two disks to finish one job. When I put Win98 cd in to install, it would not install until I set up the C drive with system files or something like that. Then I used Fdisk and I guess I didn't partition the full extent of the 15 Gigs so now I have to look at the drive and set it up again.

Is there one easy way to do all of this from beginning to end?

Thanks
Dave

try here: bootdisk.com I believe the one by Doctor Device boots to a menu that allows you to select whether to boot with or without CD-ROM support. It will automatically detect multiple cd-rom drives and load each one.

I just use a Windows Startup disk, it has the option of starting with or without CD-Rom, then run Fdisk, then Format. I prefer using this method over the Max-Blast disk included with the Maxtor HDDs.
EDIT- as far as the "full potential" of your HDD, the "actual size of a 15 gig HDD is about 14.3 gigs.

Hi
For partitioning the HDD go to HDD download site http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm and download the Maxtor HDD partition file Maxblastplus. After downloading and installing the HDD this file, you can boot your HDD using WIN98 startup Disk. Or if possible arrange these two files either from DOS 6.22 or from win98 startup disk 1. mscdex.exe and 2. oakcdrom.sys and copy these two files to your c: drive. Them add command in (After transfering sys files to your c: and booting using systems files.) autoexcec.bat and config.sys respectivley
1. c:\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 in (Autoexec.bat)
2. DEVICE = C:\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd001 in (config.sys)
reboot the system and your system will statr with CDROM suppoer.
