I had some problems - kernel exception problems resulting in BSODs - so I did a Repair using the Win2K CD, but now I can't get the drive out of PIO mode. I've tried deselecting and reselecting in the Device Manager to no avail.

Drive is the WD 100GB Special Edition w/8MB cache. Any thoughts?

try removing the ide channel that the hdd is on in device manager then rebooting.
windows will re-enumerate the channel & hopefully your hdd will be using dma transfers!

Have you installed any service packs?

Pre-SP1 Win2k does not automatically enable UDMA transfers. Check the Microsoft KB for the appropriate fix, I think you have to change a registry setting.

Running Win2K Pro SP2.

Tried removing the IDE channel and Windows reinstalled it, but the problem still remains. I have "DMA if available" selected, but the drive only does PIO.

Another weird thing happened during all the problems I was having... IE5.5 all of a sudden went from 128-bit encryption to 56-bit, and I had to upgrade it again. Weird.

Can I run IBM's Drive Fitness on this WD drive?

Does anyone else have any ideas - please?

You could try a new IDE cable. Or at least reseat the present one. I know if the cable is developing problems the system will drop down your transfer rate. Once it drops down there is no way to get it back up short of reinstalling your IDE drivers. Anyway, something cheap to try, at least.

The problem with IE is totally weird. I've never heard of that happening.
