i can use one of the two HDDs for my xbox (the one i dont use will go to my bro)

maxtor 160 GB 7200 rpm 8 mb cache 1 year warrenty
samsung 160 GB 7200 rpm 2 mb cache 3 year warrenty

two questions:

1. how reliable are samsungs?
2. how much of a difference does the extra cache make for an xbox? ie should i use the one with the bigger cache or use the one with the longer warrenty?

i'm pretty sure the xboxes only support up to a max of 137 gb...i may be wrong though

Edit: and, as you've written it, they both have 8mb cache...typo?

Using the latest X2 Bios you could go up to 2 terabytes of HD storage :p .

As for which HD to choose. Go with the one that runs coolest and/or the most quiet.

Well id say keep the maxtor, i had a 160 gig samsung (2 actually) and one broke after a few weeks luckily it was under warrenty and an engineer came and replaced it with a Western Digital 160 gig. The samsung that still remains does seem to get lower scores on a few benchmark programs ive tried so i dont think its as good. Not saying all samsungs suck but mine did :( so anyways id pick the maxtor.

Remember that the hd has to "lock" when its in the xbox. Better do some research to figure out which one is more likely to do that, or try both and make sure it will.

I have read on the After Dawn forums that some people said it let images load faster and levels due to them being cached, but only in some games like Halo. Or if you are going to run games directly off the HD I would say to get the bigger cache as it will help keep everything running smoothly.

Oh and Dont plan on upgrading to live 3.0 if you have a bigger then stock HDD. Microsoft is now looking at GBs

I doubt its possible because if Live detects youre not using the original Bios your eeprom gets banned. The only way to currently use Live on a modded Xbox is to disable the mod chip so the original bios gets loaded.

wrong, wrong, and wrong. the newest bios for the xecuter chips can lock hard drives and trick the xbox all in one easy function. i play live on mine with a modded HDD. the xbox is fooled and it only sees 8-10gb, whichever your xbox had originally.

go to xbox-scene.com and read about how you can play live with a modded chip. there already IS a bios fix for this.

oh, and for anyone that thinks there is a max of 137gb, you are wrong. the xbox comes with 6 partitions. if you have <137gb, all of the partitions are the same size as the stock drive, except for F:. all of the extra gets dumped in F:. if you have >137gb, F: holds 129gb and the rest goes to the new partition, G:. G: can be as big as you want. some people have 300gb drives in their xbox...so that puts about 129 in F and the rest (after the tables have ganked like 20-30 gb) goes to G:.

to answer the OP's question: it doesnt really matter. either way, it is a lot faster than running it off of a DVD. plus, you turn it on and off so much, it has a much better chance of premature death no matter what brand it is.

The code might be there but it doesnt matter because theyre not actually doing anything about it and no one is being banned for it. They might not even be looking at HD info at all, the code is there, its not used tho. Im sure its just like the backdoors M$ has put in Windows to spy on you.

see my two replies ^^

you can trick the xbox into thinking it is only 8-10gb. all you need is a dashboard that reads the HDD info and the correct bios. currently there is no way it can be detected because it appears to be the original OEM hard drive. if you used the signed code from the stock HDD, live cant detect it.
