I have a 1 TB HDD that was installed in a Lacie Network Space NAS but after a powercut it has not worked. I thought this might be a problem with the linux install so I plugged it into the PC but I am still having problems.

When I start the PC I hear the HDD's spin up and then the one I have added starts trying to seek but it fails. I get a high pitch squeak roughly every second and it slows down the post memory test and the IDE/USB device detect phase. It then halts the PC when trying to detect SATA devices. The HDD is a Hitachi Deskstar 7k1000.B Model HDT721010SLA360 and I am wondering if anybody else has had any similar errors and how they were resolved. I think the drive is dead but I am asking just in case there are any known fixes.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Probably the best you can do is connect the drive to a known good controller & test it. If it doesnt work then the thing was damaged by the crappy power supply of the thing that it was installed in when the power went out (this is why we buy quality PSUs - because they have large soothing capacitors & better protection against supply voltage surges/variations).

Maybe SPINRIGHT would help to get data from the drive if recovery is needed, otherwise send it to Hitachi RMA as it should be under warranty.
