HDD Dead?

I have a Maxtor SATA hdd and a Raptor SATA hdd. The maxtor is on the 2nd sata channel. Anyway, when Windows XP goes to load the screen goes black and stays that way after the windows logo comes up before it would actually go into windows.

When I disconnect the maxtor everything works ok. I've tried swapping cables and channels and a lot of things. Tried to load windows with a PATA hdd as well and the maxtor would not let it load. I only got into windows once and could only see one of the drives partitions (on the maxtor).

I'm pretty sure something is physically wrong with this drive. Since i have an Asus A7v600 i can't even run maxtors diag tool to see what it is.

Is there anything I can do to retrieve some of my data on my own? There is no OS installed on the maxtor, its just a few partitions with various data.

When you get this rectified, I strongly suggest you put anything you care about, on any other brand of hard drive.

Thanks
I'll give it a try.
Also, is Maxtor known to fail? I usually thought they were pretty good. Guess I'll stay with WD for now though. Any other good brans you'd recommend?

maxtor=1.loud
2.loud
3.break down
4.have a short life
5.loud

Simple way to retrieve your data is to boot with knoppix... You can then either move your data to a network share if you have one or write it to cd if you have a cd writer. I'm pretty sure the link for barts above will do almost the same thing. Good luck.
